Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez of Back to the Roots headlined at our May Maker Talk. We've been fans of their Mushroom Kit for a long time, and recently tried out their new Aqua Farm. Using the science of aquaponics, the Aqua Farm transforms your fish's waste into nutrients for the plants. Even better, Nikhil and Alex actually worked with PETA to make sure it remained both cruelty free AND educational. We loved getting to hear the story behind their successful business and know you will too. Click through to watch their presentation and here for Maker Talk tickets!
Guest: Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez
About: "They were just a few months away from graduation at UC Berkeley when they first heard that you could grow gourmet mushrooms on recycled coffee grounds. Inspired by the idea of turning waste into fresh, local food, they experimented in Alex' fraternity kitchen, ultimately growing one test bucket of oyster mushrooms. With that one bucket and incredible support from the community, they decided to forgo their investment banking and consulting offers. Instead they became full-time urban mushroom farmers and haven't looked back since!"
A special thanks to...
Our wine sponsor, Evolution Wine
"Our goal is to make a wine that appears simple - easy drinking, relaxing - but in reality is quite complex. Producing a proprietary blend like Evolution is a combination of art and science. Our winemaker, Russ Rosner, says, "In over twenty years of winemaking this is by far the hardest wine I've had to make. It's like mixing nine different colors of paint and trying to end up with a rainbow instead of a muddy brown."
