An Out Of Sight Victorian Ceiling Treatment

This Old House

Most homeowners pat themselves on the back for just scraping off that old popcorn ceiling and adding a fresh coat of paint. In this home however, the parents' plans for the ceilng took center stage. While most of us would love the idea of trim (crown moulding or otherwise), this family has made and installed a true work of art.

This crazy cool ceiling ornamentation was built by hand in their family workshop. Now, it helps to have wood working skills that rival Norm Abram from The New Yankee Workshop, but nonetheless, this transformation is just jaw dropping. While most of us focus on the treatment of the walls, the time and effort put into the ceiling in this nursery space will be enjoyed for many years to come.

An added bonus is that the ornate wood detailing gives the illusion of more height when it's really only 8 feet like most homes. The two-toned paint on the walls and the extra detailing open it up wide and makes it feel ridiculously grand. Plus, who needs a mobile when you have that to look at from your crib?
