Name: Anna Weiss, Luby Kelley, son Samson, daughter Harper and cat Bigs
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Size: 1300 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 — owned
We regularly bump into Anna and Luby as regulars on the estate sale circuit. Like us, they gravitate towards all things mid-century. Unlike us (who hoard like demented squirrels), Anna and Luby actually sell their finds and run a successful on-line business. It makes sense that their home could double as a showroom, with no shortage of beautiful and interesting things to look at. Their 1950s house, with vaulted ceilings and warm wood paneled walls, provides the perfect backdrop.

Anna focuses on higher-end furniture and collectibles, while Luby deals in pop culture and toys. Strange bedfellows in theory, the two combined strike a nice accord. What could be spare and minimalist is punctuated by bright plastics, and nostalgic bits of childhood. And what could be a sea of endless bric-a-brac is tempered by the sophistication of clean lines. It's as if Graceland met Falling Water and the two fell in love.
Anna and Luby live hard in their home and, with two kids, require ease, fun, and functionality. They've created a home that's both true to itself, and to its occupants.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Emphasis on Mid-Century Modern with utilitarian design.
Inspiration: The house really inspires us. Open floor plan, lots of natural light, brick and wood elements. Going to estate sales every week and getting to see layouts and design of untouched vintage decor is really a basis for our inspiration. Many homes we see have not been altered in the past 40 or 50 years. We add our own spin when we bring it home.
Favorite Element: The openness from the front porch walkway all the way through to the back patio. This openness includes the vaulted ceilings which makes the house feel larger than it really is.
Biggest Challenge: Editing is the biggest challenge. We both work from home with two kids under the age of 3. We try to keep everything minimal, but its hard with our jobs. We love so much and our taste changes all the time. Trying to decide what to keep and can be practically used without destroying the item or destroying its value is a challenge. I just bought a high end cane back chair that I love. Not three days later, canning was already coming undone by guests sitting in it. Everything in the house gets heavily used, so it must be practical.
What Friends Say: Since we keep things moving in and out, people normally will ask if something is new. Quote from actual friend: "Part design museum part toy store packed with the best kind of nostalgia. Always changing. Cool but still comfortable."
Biggest Embarrassment: Lack of window treatments and rugs. They tend to be the more expensive accessory, so we haven't committed to all the windows yet. We are waiting for the kids to be a little older before getting some living room rugs. Hardwood is just easier to clean.
Proudest DIY: Kitchen cabinets. When we moved in we knew we wanted to keep the original Geneva cabinets, but because they were too far gone from smoke damage they needed to be repainted or replaced. The top cabinets were mustard yellow and the bottom were brown. We took all the doors and drawers off, as well as the oven face and door and took them to Maaco. We were able to have them all painted for about $300. We painted the original cabinets in place ourselves. It really made the original orange boomerang Formica countertop pop.
Biggest Indulgence: We don't indulge too often because we purchase so much from estate sales and auctions. The George Kovacs ceiling fan in living room was probably the biggest indulgence for us. It took forever for us to decide. The airflow in the house requires a ceiling fan in the main living area. And while it doesn't seem like a fan can be a focal point, it is obvious once you put the wrong one in. It took almost a year and more than we wanted to spend, but finally found the right one and it was totally worth it.
Best Advice: When shopping vintage, if you see something you like you should snatch it up. More likely than not, it will be gone within a day or two and you can always resell it if you get it home and it doesn't work for you. When shopping retail, if you're not sure, put it down. You can always come back to it. You should hold out until you get exactly what you want. Work with what you have. Not what you want. Let your space dictate what looks best. Just because it looks great in your friends loft doesn't mean it will work in your ranch.
Dream Sources: The random phone-call from a stranger asking us to come purchase their grandparents Danish Modern estate.

fantastic! love their collections :)
Such a cheerful home :)
so adorable & beautiful! great combo!
I want to be a child again and live in this house.
Your beautiful oven and Roy and Dale made me covet.
Great looking house. I love all the wood panelled walls and the hardwood floors with the dashes of colour from the different decorations.
And the cat rocks. I love her expression! She seems a bit skeptical of the whole photo experience.
Beautiful modern house!
House is fun and fantastic! Oven is a gem, totally worth refinishing. Sweet Naughas, too!
hmmmn... seeing the bright giraffe coat-rack makes me really, really crabby that I didn't scoop up the (matching) elephant toy box I saw at a thrift store a couple of weeks ago. It was clearly a part of a set... maybe Fisher Price? or...?
I love that kitchen! The rest of the house seems a little weird to me, but whatever.
Beautiful home. Thank you AT - please show us more homes without deer heads and keep calm and carry on signs! I love love love your toddler furniture and the way it coordinates with your design style.
Love it! Great house, great people! XO
Love that kids and style can go together!!
I absolutely love your kitchen! I also love that you didn't gut this home but chose to work with it's natural elements - kudos b/c it is gorgeous.
Re: best advice - LOL, that is actually the worst advice you could give me...I have this super annoying tendency to want to purchase vintage stuff just b/c "Iloveitanditwillgosomewhere..." Drives my partner insane!
CAT
After the story about the famous ceiling fan, was disappointed to see only a tiny bit of the end of one blade. :(
I really like the little modern chairs stashed beneath that black coffee table under the little shelving unit. I like the black coffee table too, I guess. And the pops of color throughout.
Thanks for all the positive comments about our space. The pictures shown look great. Those chairs are COSCO booster seats and are available on ebay usually. Yes, I too am disappointed the fan we mentioned somehow didn't make the cut. There's so much that we are so happy and proud of that is not pictured either. But that's how it goes. I know when we look at the other tours we're generally anxious to see more too.
So light, bright, airy, and clean!
That oven is awesome!
Nice to see such an authentic and well edited space.
I too like that this couple bought this home without the intent to just gut it, but to use the elements faithfully.
Great job!
I LOVE the wall unit in the little boy's room. I assume it is a vintage find. If not, WHERE? :D
Wow! I haven't liked Danish Modern for a long time, especially when I see it in houses that are older than the 1950's. Here though, it is done perfectly. It suits and enhances the architecture of that house because it belongs in that time period. I love the bright, colorful furniture and paintings with the wood walls and brick fireplace, the orange kitchen counters with the green chairs, and the old fashioned toy displays, especially the Snoopy statue. Whoever designed this interior is incredibly talented.
Ditto foogiefive.
Love this space. Really inspiring. And it's reaffirmed my desire for wood paneling (not that it needed any more affirmation...)
very well done!
I love how you saved the old cabinets and orange boomerang Formica countertop. It looks great - especially with the vintage oven.
I now want orange counter tops. very cool house.
This is very well done!
I like the color combination of the whole house...
the kitchen is gorgeous!
Perfect! Your house is perfectly executed. Love it!
I absolutely love that headboard in the last two frames! So cool!
I love the small touches throughout the house. they really make it feel like a home.
And that cat is absolutely adorable!
That is a really nice looking cat!
As for the house, not my taste but exquisitely executed. It has a strong design vision yet looks very livable.
Awesome
AMAZING! We have a 56' brick ranch in the midwest similar to this, but its not nearly as authentic. Its hard to find homes from the 50's that haven't had unfortunate updates. The previous owners put crown moulding and plate rails (seriously? in a 50's modern ranch? ok.) in our house. Real sad.
I LOVE your house! So colorful and well put together. I even love your cat.
Seeing a house like that makes me want to have children!
I absolutely adore this house! Can you tell me about the print above the boy's bed (the pic with the Componibili)? Thanks!
Love the vintage giraffe coat rack! Been looking for something like this for my little girl for months!!
This house is joyous. All of the warm wood on the floor and the walls helps anchor the pop culture stuff. Love the diagonally-laid wood in the kitchen. The bedroom is unique and serene, quite a surprise after the kid's room!
I like the cat and the oven - the rest; not so much - doesn't look comfortable and lived in.
Love every room - what a great place to grow up!
LOVE your home! I especially appreciate seeing a home that doesn't look like every other space featured here recently. Nice to see some originality! I'd live here in a heartbeat! :)
I have to ditto foogiefive's comments. When I saw the first "Keep Calm and Carry On" sign I loved it. The second one was amusing. Now they're absolutely everywhere (here, AND at Good Will, Salvation Army, etc!!). It's nice to see a home featured here that isn't trying to be like everyone else's (if homes could have ambitions, that is). Great job!
You did everything right, such a pleasure to look at your house.
Your living room is eerily similar to ours architecturally... only you decorated it much better! I love your kitchen! I thought for sure that was a new Formica countertop, because it looks to be in such great shape! We just bought two rolls of the aqua boomerang for our remodel, and now, after seeing your kitchen, I'm really wanting to find some vintage steel cabinet to go with it.
Great house, and your toddler is adorable!
Lovely! And I love the use of color in a really friendly and inviting way. Love the way you aren't too neat with the bookshelves and show individual personalities! I'd love to be an adult, not just a kid in your place!
Are there so many yard sales and Estate sales that we should all move to St. Louis?
Where's the blue blanket spread from?
The only thing I DON'T like is the giraffe! Everything else is perfect. I have so many compliments that I'll leave it at "perfect." I would say all of those pint-sized designer chairs are a waste -kids grow, but being in the business, they'll probably be easy to sell. It's nice to have seating that's the right size for your tikes. I was a little surprised they edited out your fan too! Where oh where are those red & yellow cylindrical tables in the kids' bedroom from??
mold-a-ramas....YES YES YES!
FYI, RE: Proudest DIY -
That is NOT a DIY. Removing your drawers and doors and then paying someone else to paint them is not really DIY. Sorry. I mean, they look great - but, just sayin...
no comments, just wonderful
somebody PLEASE tell me where that funky little blue wall unit/organizer behind the kids' table is from?!!!!!
I love EVERYTHING about this house...I love orange, I painted my gross cement house orange, and I am in LOVE with your countertops!!! I wish I could come over for tea or coffee or just to drool all over the kitchen. :-)
By the way, what is that red (metal?) pan thingie with the funny shaped handles that is hanging by the sink on the side of the cabinet? I have a yellow one just like it and cannot figure out its history (if any). I fill mine with water and float a bunch of candles in it...not sure if its food-safe though.
heela - The pan looks like a Dansk Kobenstyle Jens Quistgaard Pan for making Paella. Search Google for "Quistgaard Paella pan".
This is a beautiful home with so many cool things in it, especially that Snoopy.
I seriously covet that Snoopy!
