Name: Anna (and her urban chickens)
Location: St. Paul, Minnesota
Anna’s quaint home screams “hygge” as soon as you walk in. “Hygge” explains Anna “is distinctly Danish.” There is no translation in English, but it can be best described as a feeling of warmth & coziness; usually the result of candlelight, flowing wine, great company, and delicious food.
And that cozy, warm feeling envelops you like a mothers hug upon entering Anna’s beautiful home. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Anna decided to move to Copenhagen, Denmark as an architecture and design intern for the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. The time that she has spent in Denmark has very much influenced her style. From her framed Danish posters, to her Marimekko textiles, to her Littala votives, Anna’s place screams Scandinavian design.

Uh...nitpicking, but "hygge" isn't a word you normally scream. Murmur, maybe!
The mental picture of something or someone screaming "HYGGE!!!" gave me a grin, thanks!
Beautiful home from the looks of it from the outside but once again, all vignettes and no full interior shots. Is this an AT editorial slant? If so, please stop. Love the house but please...stop with the cutesy vignette pics.
The limestone lintels! The transom above the front door! It's got a lovely, graceful asymmetry about the facade... I guess it's the offset door and three balancing windows.
Another DIS alum, here. My experience in Denmark forever transformed my views on design, and I was a biology student while I was there. Nice place!
I agree with designersdesigner. There has been an overload of cutesy vignette pics latetly. Please let us see the actual room.
Sure cutesy vignette pics can be trouble, I just want a full on house tour, beautiful place!
Jealous! My house in Minneapolis has this stone for the basement and I really don't like it. But now I have seen yours, I can imagine how it looked originally.
Hi everyone - FYI, this is a house call post and therefore is smaller in scope than a full tour, but hopefully we'll be able to share all of this wonderful home with you in the near future.
Also, a request: any editorial feedback can always be sent to "editorial@apartmenttherapy.com" - it is a more direct way to share your opinions with the editors and helps to keep the comment threads on topic.
Thanks!
I think those Bertoia chairs are screaming "distinctly Italian."
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
Love the house, love the interiors, but I really dislike that door color. It's just disrespectful of the house style and color. I don't mind the orange, just that it's so intensely neon. Something a BIT more subdued would look better to me -- unless it's just the photo...
I thinked I'd like a house tour, but I'm a little put off by the dead animal :( how did this ever become a style trend is beyond me.
I would love to see a full tour--the house exterior is so charming, and I, for one, like the juicy orange door. Giggled at hygge and scandinavian design screaming . . .
Here's hoping there's a House Call coming soon!
As a fellow St. Paulite, I'm glad to see another one of my neighbors on AT!
@LovelyFrugalHermit - I agree. On AT today, there are no less than three homes with mounted heads on their walls.
I have those same night and day prints that are leaning on the black ledge above the couch. So unique and fun! Love them and this house!
I LOVE the bright door!
The chicken tractor looks a lot like the ones made by Hand Crafted Coops: http://handcraftedcoops.com/chicken-coop-specs ... who are at the top of my list if I ever have a place where I can keep some hens.
Ampersands in body copy make me scream.
Ah... My hometown, the STP... Would you mind dishing the wall colors of pic #2?
Love the exterior. Makes me want to move in, but couldn't get a feel for the interior from the photos.
Love it! Show us more, please.
Yes, please give us a home tour. This place is beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
A beautiful home that shows a great marriage of simple, yet intelligent historical design with both tasteful and respectful decor reflective of Danish influences.
Bravo, or as the Danish would say... "Dygtig!"
Criticism regarding the true color of a door from a photograph that is uploaded to this site then is being seen on your computer is banal.
Displeasure of seeing "a dead animal" would be your issue not the home owner's, is possibly not a "style trend" in this case as you have suggested, and might actually have some historical significance. Huh... new concept! :)
And any comment "complaining" to see more of the house SCREAMS of stalking behavior.
"Love the exterior. Makes me want to move in, but couldn't get a feel for the interior from the photos."
Love the dining room.
Couldn't we just make a rule that says 'no mounted animal carcasses' on AT? Pretty please?
Hi janel. Thanks for the info. I'll send those types of suggestions your way. But just wanted to let all of you know that I love what you all do. You all deserve a big raise and HUGE hug! lol! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and creativity!
oh my! i love the exterior of this house. especially the bright door!
& I enjoy the mounted animals. When used in moderation (as here) I think they add something of history to a room.
Umm, the word "hygge" is distinctly Danish. And no, one usually doesn't scream it. Also, though born in Italy, Harry Bertoia is generally considered an American designer and his designs are manufactured by an American firm in the United States (Knoll), so I am confused as to why those chairs are screaming Italian. Too much screaming going on for such a cute little house. I like what I see, would love to see more.
House tour! That's a pretty stylish chicken coop. The exterior pulled me right in!
@antihero's antihero
If Anna or her chickens actually hunted the animal, I will agree. Even if her great grandparents killed the animal and it's been in the family for generations, I will give you your "historical significance".
BUT, my father is a hunter and has no less then four deer heads in his home. I'm not a fan of those either, even knowing how proud he is of them.
Hey it's Anna here, thanks for all the wonderful comments!
About the door, it is coming across as neon rather than red orange, and even the current color I would rather be a richer red-orange, which is why there is no screen on the door, getting ready for a new paint job...
About the big horn sheep in the dining room, my grandpa bought it at an antique store, he fell in love with the big horned sheep when he lived in Colorado, and now it has been passed down to me.
Paint colors are: BM 2131-60 Silver Gray in the dining room and BM 2146-30 Split Pea in the kitchen. All with BM White Dove trim (semi-gloss) and ceilings (flat).
About the coop, I researched a lot online for different tractors and from the pics was able to construct it myself, that is the summer coop, the winter one is a bit different and has 1-1/2" insulation. Keeps them pretty happy, I have been getting one egg from each chicken every day since last august, x3chicks = 21 eggs every week...
Oh, Anna. I'm so disappointed. I was kinda loving the image, per LovelyFrugalHermit, of your chickens hunting down the sheep like a packed of clucking wolves.
Great house, though. Count me among those who'd like to see a full tour.
And crazyreesie? If I ever make a porn flick about textophilia, your line, "Ampersands in body copy make me scream," will be prominently featured. It's so evocative, so hygge!
@antihero's antihero - I don't think anyone is deluded that their comments aren't opinion. (As is, by the way, yours.)
And wanting to see more of a home might actually be seen as flattering and not stalking. Outside your head anyway.
Just things to think about.
(Jesus what is with these comments?)
I think it's a gorgeous home Anna.
Thanx Anna!
Love it!
I have the same Marimekko fish wallhanging, but after seeing yours it looks like I hung it the wrong way...doh.
BTW, I think you mean Iittala candleholders, right? I loves me some Iittala.
Love the exterior. Reminds me of Hudson Valley River stone. So beautiful. Interior -- I'm not really feeling it.
Okay, typo-riddled ridiculousness aside, I really would love a full tour. And I really do love this house, including the gemutlichkeit chicken coop. Forgive my lack of umlaut.
Thanks for sharing your lovely home, however, the animal head mounted in what appears to be the dining room is a little odd to me. I would think another part of the home would be a better choice.
to antihero's antihero: huh?
to anna: lovely home, lovely dog!
sypage: Bertoia was born in Italy but was very much American, moved here when he was 15 and stayed here. He studied design in the US and not in Italy. Even so, mid century designers influenced each other greatly. This house does look very scandinavian, it hardly matters the origin of the furniture, it's the attitude.
Anna,
Great home - hope to see more sometime. Love the little owl print - where did you get it?
Love the door, the entire exterior and what I've seen of the interior. Love those precious chickens, too. Please don't change the door!!
Anna, your home is truly lovely! The colors are beautiful and I love the mix of traditional and modern. And I *love* the big horn sheep.
(A few of you people make me want to decorate my entire home in recycled animal heads.)
