I have never wanted stairs as much as I do now that I’ve seen Anna’s amazing painted stairway runner! I’m even tempted to build stairs to nowhere just so I can copy this look. OK, not really, but I do adore this look.

After repairing her stairwell, Anna wanted a little something extra to give the stairs pizazz. I would definitely say she achieved pizazz with this painted runner.
This project is not for the faint of heart. As you can imagine, the amount of detailed taping that goes into making those little black stripes is pretty intense but the look is totally worth it! In fact, it’s those stripes that finish off the look. Anna could have stopped at the simple yellow stripe down the middle of the stairs, but the black border gives it a tailored touch.
For anyone with stairs who wants to attempt this project, Anna posted her step-by-step process (and introduced me to the wonders of the Laser Trac!) on her blog: Take the Side Street: Painting the Runner Details.

Incredible DIY!
wonderful
In awe!
As much as I love this, I can say from experience it just doesn't last. You would have to have a very low traffic household to get any longevity out of this. I tried, and after 6 months it was pretty worn out. Not to mention the number of times we almost broke a leg (you just have to carpet stairs). Very pretty though.
@lolagirl Maybe try poly over it?
Yeah, I don't see why polyurethane top coat wouldn't protect it.
I have never seen a painted stair runner ~ very cool!!!
