Name: Veronique & Thierry
Location: SoHo, Manhattan
Size: 700 square feet, 1 bedroom rental
Years lived in: 1+
When Vero and Thierry moved in together, they shed their respective furniture histories. Their new home might seem reminiscent of a couple of recent tours. That's because Maxime of house tour and house call fame has taken it upon himself to help out some friends in need. First it was Pierre, with his apartment in the sky and now Vero and Thierry in SoHo.

Maxime likes clean lines and his friends generally take most of his advice. He'll even make a proposed floor plan and take them shopping! Because the apartment has a bit of a rustic feel — thanks to the exposed wood beams — everyone agreed that it would be most striking to contrast the bones of the space with white and modern elements.
Veronique, a budding career coach, recognizes how incredibly essential Maxime was to putting the apartment together. "He saved us so much time," she said. "We didn't make all those mistakes" inevitable in the process of creating a new home together from scratch.

Ercol Bar Stool
The apartment itself is very cool. I find the decor underwhelming. I don't think the MCM pieces (particularly the molded plastic ones) work at all. And there is very little art, which I think the walls could use (especially over the sofa).
All that wood and brick -- seems like such a "non-New York" apt -- and I mean that in a good way.
Yes, could use more art, but I think accumulating art should take time. I do agree that it does need a dash of 'something' over the couch.
I still admire Maxime's ability to create specific 'areas' within a room (i don't know if that makes sense or not) but I think this is the most underwhelming of the 3 spaces he's had featured here on AT. It hasn't come together yet, although I think it's on it's way... the bathroom esp doesn't seem camera ready. Maxime's apartment was so inspirational, and this one just incites REAL ESTATE envy, as opposed to DECOR envy :)
Perhaps if the living room walls were painted a nice rich color, all the white furnishings in the room would stand out and the lack of artwork wouldn't be so pronouced.
I think this house in progress, and having lived in my own home only one year, I understand pulling a place fully together can take some time ( especially if you're young have not aquired things).
I find the simple elements cohesive. As others said, it could use art and perhaps even a rug in the living room.
It is nice when the tv is not the focal point, but I don't know how people can comfortable watch tv that is 90 degrees from where the couch is facing.
Let me first say this is a beautiful apartment and perhaps it is a work in progress. You have some very nice pieces that will serve you for years to come.
Art would obviously be nice but usually in due time when you find what you love and have the money to do so.
Painting the walls a nice rich color as suggested by bepsf would be a great way to enrich and warm up the room.
Also, I see a missed opportunity with the windows next to the fireplace. It could be more pulled together with the right scale of pieces. I see a small comfy chair and side table to sit in read and soak in the sun. This would give some additional soft seating besides the sofa. At the other window it would be nice create maybe a low profile bookcase the same length as the brick window ledge and place an orchid or a group of plants with a beautiful glass object.
The sofa and credenza and TV could work better. Pulling the sofa away from the wall would help, everything is pushed along the walls it appears you have more room to do so. The Eames rocking chair floating like that looks odd especially with the white garden stool, maybe moving these two pieces over to one of the windows would look better.
Both dining table and kitchen table are calling out for colorful center piece whether its a bowl, big vase with flowers, red holly for the season, candles.
I would really go for it with the patio, create a day bed with colorful pillows and a cover, maybe a smaller table and two small patio chairs.
Yes always easier to critique others but you really have a nice place and furniture to work with.
The thing that popped out to me from the very first photograph was the furniture seems to clash. Sometimes I mix of styles works really nicely but it's not working for me in this case. There are so many "designy" pieces that they compete with one another. Does that make any sense?
I guess it just doesn't feel like I don't get a sense of their personality.
I agree on the art too. Some art with some personal significance could be really helpful.
A lot of these comments on here crack me up. Like put art over the couch and paint the walls. Wow -- what design by numbers book did they get those ideas from? This apartment is GREAT! I wouldn't change a thing!
Beautiful apartment looks lived in and you have great pieces. For someone whose been there a lil over a year, it does look lived in and comfy. Love the dining table and that kitchen!
Again, thanks for sharing - lovely.
ejensen, this couple willingly put their home up for public scrutiny. Everyone has different opinions about what they think about it, which is the point of this site. A lot of people noted that it seems unfinished or like a work in progress. Putting art over the couch or painting walls are no more "design by numbers" ideas than anything you are doing in your home, I'm sure. You probably have seating arranged in a conversational area and a table with chairs around it for dining. And you probably store your food in the fridge and your clothes in a closet. Not everything has to be "original" to be good, and anyway, according to that logic this apartment would fail from what many would consider cliched and uninspired decorating choices.
Sad that they decided to jetison their old stuff when they moved in as I'd have wanted to marry the best of both parties so some history was kept in the marriage of 2 into 1 space and even though they have several designer pieces, like a reproduction Eames rocker, it all looks new and almost like all of it came from a couple of sources and are contemporary versions of modern furniture, no old here that I can descern.
I agree, more art but as others have said, a little more color, either on the walls or the furniture would help a lot and would warm up the space more and bring life, as it is now, it's kind of underwhelming in areas. I will agree that this may well be a work in progress so will leave it at that.
Is it just me or is that a phallic symbol on the mantel?
The rustic brick, wood and beams draw me in right away. I love that combination in a home. I agree that some color would be nice. It would really bring out those elements and make it warmer. The home is great...so much character. How lucky to find that in NYC.
I love the architecture.
Not a huge fan of the rocker or stool in front of the fireplace. I feel like a long bench with no arms and a low profile would do better there, to draw out the fabulous length of the fireplace area. As it is, the rocker & stool break up the line.
i love all the textures and the neutrals. it all seems great to my eye
Nice.
No paint needed. The apartment is marvelous just as it is. Collecting art is a matter of time and taste but sth is missing over that beautiful couch :)
Love your kitchen and bedroom!
Agree completely with Sally305. I, too, was underwhelmed by the house tour. The apartment space is lovely with the brick and wood elements. But the over done Design Within Reach furnishings were prosaic and to quote Sally305 "Cliched and uninspired." Totally. Ciddyguy got it right when he suggested a marriage of old and new elements. Also, what's with the two spheres and the vase on the mantel? Was that some kind of a vignette?
I have to agree with everyone else. The molded white plastic, hard-edged contemporary designs (the dining table, TV cabinet) and rustic elements don't really harmonize. Perhaps this is because the people occupying this lovely space let someone else decorate it.
It seems like Maxime was so focused on realizing his vision in the living/dining area that he neglected to help his friends: fix up their bathroom (which badly needs storage); figure out an elegant alternative to hanging their jackets on the door; find comfortable side seating (that stool doesn't count); rearrange the objects on their mantel (the current items are too similar in shape and size and color and are lined up in a pretty boring way); find art (or wall colors) and an area rug for the living room.
This place just needs a few touches here and there and it will look fantastic. Perhaps the owners can do a little reading up on design and figure out what their tastes are and how they want to use their space.
The architectural elements of the space are fantastic.
The kitchen has a great vibe.
It'll be interesting to see how you resolve the storage issue in your bathroom (hope you'll share when you do).
those clear/Lucite furnishings make me cringe, apart from those, the rest of the apartment is nice.
couch also seems like a little out of place, everything else is so "trendy" then you have a standard pottery barn type of couch and coffee table, just does not go together.
Lovely space, but It doesn't look pulled together. Looks a little off. Not loving the white rocker and little side table next to it. Not understanding the whole a desinger did my home look. Sorry! Not trying to be mean.
