It's pretty clear: here at Re-Nest we love a good pallet project. Check out this new use for one of our favorite materials over at Get Back To The Garden: a compost bin! Created in only one hour you need to check this one out!
I love the way Travis describes his new compost bin:
I made this new compost bin in about an hour using four pallets and four 4X4's cemented in at the corners. I left the pallet facing the camera connected only with twisted wire through eye-hooks for easy bi-annual removal. and yes, those are cutoffs.
So simple, yet so thoughtful. This is a functional design that is made inexpensively using repurposed items. Couldn't get better than that! See more at Get Back To The Garden.

Great!
We did the same thing a few years ago, but made it a 3-binner. This may be obvious, but I'll go ahead and say it... make sure your fire place ashes are completely out before putting them on your pile. Compost and pallet bins burn very easily:(
Also, sweet shorts!
Yikes, i wouldn't put my compost up against the wall of the house.
Please make sure you use untreated wood.
We cranked out a half-dozen of these for our community compost pile this spring; they come together easily if you have enough similarly-sized pallets.
I also recommend lining them with 1/4" wire mesh which is easy to find at any hardware store - anything larger a mouse can get through. If you staple the mesh down before assembly it's a snap.
We put hinges on ours, and a hook-eye latch, but we turn ours far more often.
This is the compost-builder's wife, Abbey. Don't worry, we didn't put the compost directly against the house. It's hard to see it in this picture, but there's a pallet between the compost and the brick so that air circulates all around the bin.
Where do people find such nice looking pallets on this website? It seems like every pallet tutorial shows beautiful pallets. I made my compost bin out of pallets last year, and it looks like it could fall apart at any time. Not that it matters, its job is to hold dirt so no need to be vain. But seriously! Beautiful pallet find!
