Yesterday's rainbow pancakes caused a bit of a stir here at Ohdeedoh. Controversy or not, we're still craving color, especially since we have six more weeks of winter to endure. Enter this sophisticated rainbow cake.
We spotted this beautiful birthday cake over at Oh Happy Day. The palette is delicious! Anyone have any idea on how to make this?

That cake is beautiful!! I am in love with the way it is set up, with the candles all in a row. And it looks delicious, too!
oh my word that is so lovely!!!
Love it!
That's an amazing cake!
I went to art school just to play with colours, so I will now be obsessed with that cake! My daughter, who inherited the must-play-with-colours gene would love it!!
My fav. part is the total disaster all around it - that is so me - make something totally gorgeous and get done and realize the house is a complete disaster! Judging by what looks like icing between each layer it looks like the layers were dyed and baked separately.

Exercised my Goggle muscle and here is what I found. The original 28-layer version was featured on Serious Eats in October ( http://www.seriouseats.com/2009/10/photo-of-the-day-28-layer-rainbow-cake.html ). Here is a step-by-step with photos posted in December for a 20-layer version that was inspired by the Serious Eats post: http://www.chocolatesuze.com/2009/12/04/20-layer-rainbow-cake .
Wow. What a time investment. Its cute. Only I you know all the girls will want pink cake and then... uh oh.
Go Yolanda! I've been digging for the past 20 minutes!
My first thought was where is my easy bake oven from childhood. I could do this with that. The little cakes made from that are about the size of each layer. I think I know what I am going to be doing this weekend! Easy bake oven & food dye...... ooohhh the fun......
Wow - yummy - I would take a print out of this and frame it and stare at it for the next 6 weeks of dully dreary winter!
Love it love it!!!
Oh my god, oh my god, how many hours did that take to make? It looks like a pantone chart, I want to bathe in it, but I would not pretend for a moment that I have the strength and fortitude to make something like that!
they are fun to make but you have to be prepared for 1. repetitive stress injuries (depending on the amount of colors you choose) and 2. if you over mix you will have a tough cake. seems like a rock in a hard place what with the mixing in new colors and not over mixing but it is possible. i've also read someone use sprite to keep things moist.
it is fun to cut into them though. good for all bday parties age 2 to 200!
perfectly timed for our Rainbow Art Party...though, I think I am sticking with the previously featured round layer cake...and not the full 28-layer one here.
LOVE the mini cake pan idea, though...sweet.
It's... well disgusting.
Sorry, nothing could induce me to eat anything in those colors. And they say we should try and give our children better eating habits...
i've seen several variations of this cake, but this one by far is the most amazing i've seen! i would definitely have a hard time eating it...i have this weird thing about turning my mouth and teeth colors...BUT the artist in me that craves bright beautiful color would definitely overpower the weirdness and devour a huge piece just because it's awesome!!! :)
Thanks Loora. For a moment, I thought *I* was the only one who thought all that food color was disgusting. Can't imagine ever giving something like that to myself, let alone a child.
Get out of town. That is hilarious!
That thing must have taken a lot of work because my six-layer rainbow cake (http://pennycarnival.typepad.com/penny_carnival/2008/06/the-end-of-the.html) was plenty effort for me.
Raina--
If that was supposed to be a reference to the ROYGB(I)V Rainbow flag, you're off by a few colors.
