Like most very beautiful things, orchids are known for being temperamental and tough to care for. So when we received one at the Apartment Therapy offices recently, no one really knew what to do. That is until Henry, Senior Web Designer and apparent gardening savant, spoke up and recommended we water it with one interesting ingredient. We tried it!

It's ice!

The idea here is that adding ice (House Beautiful recommends one to two cubes a week) lets the water slowly seep into the flower's roots over a period of a few hours (as the ice melts) instead of dousing it all at once and drowning it. Plus, an ice cube is pre-portioned so there's less chance of accidentally over-watering — my personal plant care downfall.

We're giving it a shot and will report back with our results. Have you tried this method? Tell us how it went!
