Moving into the mainstream as our design views are now important to those who watch celebs, my views on what is officially "out" (drawn from what I see going on with all of you on our site) made it into this week's edition of People Stylewatch now available on newsstands everywhere. Woot! Woot! What do you think is "out"??? For the full text; head below.
"Forget all-white rooms and lucite furniture - hand-me-downs from your grandparents and finds from Craigslist are in! Sleek furnishings used to be the epitome of high design, but now people are seeking stylish comfort. Opt for cushy sofas, vintage poster art and layered rugs in rich hues for an eclectic, punchy look."

Shaw's Original Fir...
"Novels" are "in"? I feel like I lost a few IQ points just looking at that page from People.
That's funny @Ericauerbach! Just 20 seconds and I know too much about people I don't know or care about....Oh well. Congrats to Apartment Therapy!
Funny that a print publication says that novels are "in" considering how many digital readers and publications there are. Hah
I don't really care what is in and out. I know what I love.
Way to go! Though I do still like some aspects of ultramodern, it just needs to be balanced with some more homey items. And I refuse - REFUSE - to button my top button; I don't care if it marks me as unfashionable! ;D
Do notice they suggest books from two children's authors- is the writer of this piece 20? :)
PLEASE....leave the People Magazine 'fluff' out of Apartment Therapy!
I feel like this is some kind of philosophical/semantic debate. If ultra modern is out (and by 'modern', let's assume that also means 'contemporary'), then what do we call the current trend? Isn't whatever is going on today modern and contemporary, regardless of the design influence? Whatever is trendy today is by default "modern" because it's in the here and now.
But if all white is out, then I'm golden. I could never keep an all white apartment looking great.
sheep
I'm not taking style advice (or any other advice) from a publication that features the Kardashians (or any of the other talentless "celebrities" of reality tv) on their cover every week.
I'm glad there are articles in People magazine that lets me know what's "in" and what's "out". Otherwise, I'd have no way of knowing and that would be a real shame. Definitely buttoning my shirt up all the way and heading to the library to pick-up a novel, post haste.
OMG I too am so offended by harmlessly fun lists of trendy things! How dare you post this here! So plebeian.
P.S. Can chevron also be out, please please please?
in....out....who cares? Unless I am going to try to resell my stuff soon...but I'm not. I decorate for me. I love capitalism, but really, what's "In" can often be just another way of saying "this is the newest product I am trying to sell you." I found out a few years back that I am actually part French, and maybe that explains my idea of mixing and matching exactly what I want with a view towards hanging on to those great family pass downs and making them work in my design scheme. If ultra modern is your thing (it;s not mine), then who cares if it is going out?! ...but, this was entertaining.
@Lillian - they suggest 2 books from children's authors true, but the books aren't written for children. An author can write for more than one age group.
But I would agree w
Oops accidentally posted.
I agree with Eric - "Novels are in" what stupid thing to say.
Really..Jeeez....I find the folks that really need approval follow what 'they' say.
I agree with just about everyone who has posted...I buy/decorate/eat/read what -I LOVE- not what's in fashion.
Buttoning all the way to the top...only if I' cold.
....only if I'm cold....
Kudos, Maxwell, that People published your observations and credits you as an authority on Style. (Which is something most of us here already knew.) Way to go!
I'm also amused that "the great indoors" is OUT (what?) and intrigued by a Rowling novel "fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations."
Not interested enough to buy a People magazine, necessarily.
I only clicked on this article to read the comments. I knew everyone would hate this.
I'm hoping people who subscribe to People, like my mother, will start posting here. I'm going to hunker down for the invasion with my popcorn :)
On a more serious note, congrats Maxwell!
I hope Maxwell has a strong sense of humor! Our host was the source of the design comments, everyone -- you DID notice that, right?
That said, while I think it's cool People quoted Maxwell, I can't take People Magazine seriously on any topic.
I, too, only clicked to read the comments. You guys never disappoint!
I'm off to read a novel since they are so 'in'. I've been doing it every single day since I could read independently and now I'm FINALLY at the 'cool table'! YES!
The only thing more "out" than reading a "what's in and what's out" list is actually being guided by one.
Maxwell, I'm disappointed.
Novels were "out" at one point?
I suppose congratulations for getting some attention from a very widely read mainstream publication, but really, who gives a flip about what is "in" and "out", especially in People magazine? As several other people have already stated, go with what you like and be happy.
Novels are "in"? I'm embarrassed by and for whoever wrote that.
buttoning all the way up? I shave my head, I would look like a mental patient if I did that.
Relieved to hear that novels are now "in." I was starting to feel that I'd have to find a new pastime if I wanted to hang with the cool kids.
Novels are In? how novel.
I just think it's funny that lucite is out, and yet I can't count the amount of posts there are been about it this week (the history of the ghost chair, some more images of the ghost chair, the history of lucite...)
It appears that "celebrity" is in at Apartment Therapy.
Well, at least this wasn't about relationship advice or porn.
@VENIA101.... um, did you know you can read a novel on a digital reader? just checking... the form factor does not define the the form.
NO, Anna Lisa, chevron is not allowed to be Out. Half of my house has been paneled in pine chevron since it was built, and I'm stuck with it.
In 2011, "woot" was added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. The word is officially recognized in the dictionary without zeroes, and is instead spelled with two o's.
*sigh*
what's out: checking apartment every day or even every week.
what's in: maxie dumbing down the site to make a buck.
I believe that what's "in" or "out" is whatever makes YOU happy!!
1. The first sentence of this post is so poorly written I still don't understand it after two reads.
2. Many things that Maxwell considers out are posted daily on this site. Curious.
3. I enjoy hearing what is "out" because if I like it perhaps it means I can get it for cheap.
The concept of in and out lists was designed to keep people in the stores (and online) shopping. In the near future, Maxwell will advise us to forget hand-me-downs from grandparents and finds on Craigslist and embrace all-white rooms and lucite furniture.
Yes, enough with the crappy lucite/plastic see through furniture.
Honestly, who reads, let alone buys this crap?
Novels can't be in since they were never out. Poetry, too. Chevron can be out as soon as I'm finished banishing that birch wallpaper that's in every other house tour here. Even the one at the top of this day's entries, which otherwise I love. I'm all for cozy but layered rugs are too grandma, not to mention a safety hazard. As for the top button ... too schoolboy for my taste.
How did punchy come to mean a good thing? I mean, stabby, that's not a thing you would ever want.
OMG novels are IN and ultramodern interiors are OUT?! Why wasn't I told about this! I need to rush out and buy and entire house of stuff to be IN again! Also I've read novels most of my life, was I OUT before and only just now IN?
Uggg... The whole in/out crap makes no sense to me. Do what you like to make yourself comfy or happy. If you must change your way of doing things to impress someone that person is not worth impressing. Also changing up everything just to be "in" is a huge waste.
These guys have more reruns than USA network.
