After all the stone and tile at Coverings, it was a bit of a relief to see CORK! Made from the harvested bark of a cork tree (cork trees can be harvested about every 9 years without damaging the tree), the versatile flooring is more popular than ever. Familiar with its good qualities, I was most impressed by the variety of colors that are available…

Anyone try this yet? I got some samples sent a few days ago and it seems it easily show marks when I gouge my fingernail across it, I'm worried that if i moved something heavy it would leave a giant scratch across my floor.
I have 3 cats who don't always use the scratching post. They like my area rugs, so they would probably like a cork floor. As much as I would love it or even love to do my stairs, I might be asking for trouble. Does anyone know for sure?
We have had cork floors throughout our first floor for three years. They do not scratch easily. We live hard on these floors and they don't show a thing. I don't think cats would scratch them...there's no texture to the surface of the cork tile; it's as smooth as any other floor.
The biggest issue we've had is that cork fades quite a bit and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. Even with brand new windows, we've had significant fading. You can sand and refinish cork, but you cannot reliably stain cork evenly.
I believe there's a big difference between cork tiles and engineered cork planks. I put down planks in my laundry/bath. They look gorgeous and are very soft/warm on the feet. But my hyperactive kitty has scratched the floor just by running. The cork tiles (with waxed finish) have been used as flooring in public buildings for years and are supposed to be very durable, but they are harder to find.
I have cork in my bathroom and bedroom. It's a Wicanders product that has a "micro-porcelain" finish. I LOVE them. Clean up in a breeze and they look gorgeous. Also nice to stand on and absorb sound like wood, or possibly better. I haven't had a fading issue so far (18 months).
No issues with my cat scratching them. The finish would make that pretty difficult I think. There's nothing to grab.
