Name: Apryl Miller
Location: Upper East Side, New York, New York
Once upon a time, I found myself with a very large white box, divided into many other small, white boxes. I, who came from a DIY family, had to take these boxes and make a nest for myself and my young children.
Out of my passion for my children and wanting to create a childhood home that was unlike any other, I accomplished my goal. But in the process, what came out of it was the emergence of myself as an artist.
Much like the magician who begins pulling the silk scarf from his throat, I have continued to produce with an unabated creativity. My home is not one put together by curation, rather it was created.
Most items in it are custom designs and concepts, or they are reworked designs, such as my furniture, which is covered in vintage 1960's garment fabrics. There are sprawling carpets with tear drops, a child sized loft and a stage for each daughter, imaginative installations in all corners, and indescribable tile work in the bathrooms, just to mention a few of it's features. In the dining room there is an installation which dominates the entire room. It is called "The Where and The How Left you and your Silence" (shown in last photo).
My apartment has been described in the media as "fantastically whimsical." It has over 150 paint colors, very little black and one small planned rectangle of white, that I had painted in my studio on the wall. It has patterns painted on the inside of the closets and none of the door knobs match. It is a world unto itself and it is unlike any other space, I promise you.
Thanks, Apryl!

I would love to have grown up here. My daughter would love it too. I hope your girls never tire of it. :)
Gorgeous sofa--great job. I love everything but the "installation".
Talk about a room for color!
That sofa is . . . is . . . I can't think of a creative enough word but it is just gorgeous.
The art installation looks to me like a regular old mess on the floor.
Wow. I hope this isn't a rental.
One of the craziest things I have ever seen. And I love it.
I adore the couch in the first picture.
I really like the idea behind this, but always feel a little sad when the color and crazy creativity in a child's room comes from the adult and not the child. For me, I prefer blank-slate children's rooms that begin with tons of raw materials and tools, and end up turning into the child's vision of their perfect fantasy world. But this is definitely out-of-the-box design.
I applaud your passion and creativity!! As a cozy minimalist this freaks out all my sensibilities. And I agree with blank slate kids rooms but to each their own!
Color, color, everywhere...and not a smidge of beige...
It's bright, but too colorful for me. I need something more serene.
LOVE the bright color, don't love all the clutter----so much stuff on every surface that you don't know where to look.
Again, colorful is good---but I'm an insomniac as it is, and I'd have a terrible time resting or sleeping here.
Glad you love it, though!
I really appreciate the concept and the execution is inspiring, there are elements to this home that I would incorporate into other homes, in very small doses. I love seeing dwellings that really make a strong design statement, whether they're my taste or not.
This is an exuberantly creative space and truly seems to encourage and celebrate childhood, imagination, and experimentation, but I would not be at all surprised if any of the daughters develop a taste for minimalism as they grow older :) just sayin' some kids rebel in an Alex P. Keaton kind of way.
Gives me a headache just looking at it. But hey, it's your place and not mine: congrats on a vision and the courage to make it come to life :)
Golly, I feel as if I've been visited by a unicorn bearing a double rainbow crafted specially for me!
Or maybe I'm just on acid.
WOW! Your life is pure art. How is this not a full tour?!
Oh my! This outsihines Memphis (style) and Pee Wee Herman. Can't figure out what the last pic is supposed to be but the others are great riots of color. Actually, I wouldn't mind being sick and laying here and just looking at everything (and eventually falling asleep). Very impressive.
Love the couch. Everything else, not so much. But that's my need for simplicity with one quirky thing lest my head explode.
That said, the fearless "THIS IS MY HOUSE" attitude is so admirable I tip my hat to you. Seriously.
The sofa is stunning but there are so many other things going on in the room that it is lost in the kaleidoscope of color. It would be gorgeous in front of a black wall.
So creative! Amazing really! The amount of personal touch in every corner is incredible. But for me, I need spaces that I can go that are less energizing. I like having the feel of the room match the mood I want in that room. I prefer a game room or workout room (or even a living room) to be bold and colorful- but I like my bathrooms to feel sterile, my bedroom to feel organic, the kitchen to feel simple, and the dining room to feel stately. Interior design is important to me only because it can help put me in a certain mindset or mood.
This place is beautiful, but I wouldn't have the energy to appreciate living in it. I actually did the living rooms of the first couple apartments I had in a manner really similar to this. It was a lot of fun and guests seemed to enjoy it. I just don't have the personality to do it everywhere. I NEED WHITE BOX

That rug in the first photo should win a prize for Best On-The-Nose Beyond-Your-Wildest-Dreams Accessory in the category of Impossibly Narrow, Quirky, Uncommercial Design Aesthetics. And the prize should be named after the sofa.
This is certainly a creative home, no doubt about it. If I fell into Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole, this is where I would land, and if I was under 10 years old, I would absolutely love it. However, when the daughters are teenagers, I sense they might become embarrassed with their home and won't want to have friends over.
"Fantastically Whimsical" huh....how about "Erratically Eccentric"....still polite but slightly more honest....Lawd have mercy.
Love! <3
LOVE YOUR DIGS! I'm an artist who loves color too. I understand and appreciate your hard work and passion. Kudos to you for expressing yourself freely!!!
PS: Wish there was a close up of your tile work in the bathroom.
