Name: Arden
Location: South End — Boston, Massachusetts
I live on the top floor of a Boston brownstone that was built in 1890 (and turned into 4 separate condo units 100 years later). The 680 square foot space has an unusual layout — other than the bathroom, there are no doors. The front room is a kitchen/living room/dining room, and has a sleeping loft tucked away in the peak of the ceiling which has acquired a number of nicknames over the years, including "the cabin" and "the bed of death."
The entire place is very light-filled. There are 3 skylights, and a bay window in the front room. I, however, do not like light, so I have used a lot of darker shades of paint inside, and chosen dark curtains for the front room, and when I re-did my kitchen last year, against the advice of everyone, I chose black appliances, black granite, and black cabinets.
But even would-be vampires need some light, so the backroom is a very bright contrast to the front — there are custom-painted Italian landscape murals on either wall, and the ceiling and ladder to the roof deck are painted the palest shade of blue found in the mural's sky.
I do not have a decorating aesthetic, but rather follow the wise words of my Danish step-mother: "If there is room in your heart, there is room in your home." Everything inside is there b/c I found it (most often at an antique store), fell in love, and later figured out where to put it.
Thanks Arden!

i think it's fascinating that you 'don't like light'. i can't get enough of it! i would love to see photos of your kitchen.
I am totally in love with your place, it's gorgeous !! Is there somewhere we can see more pictures of your it ? Thanks !
Love that painted wall behind the bed.
I would love to see a full tour of this apartment. There's a fairy-tale madness about it.
WOW!!!!!!!! not my style but refreshing to see something so different on AT. I love that brick wall. The plate of fruit against that deep brown/black cabinet. The fringed lamp. so much to see!
I totally want to see more photos of this place.
More please! I'm completely swooning over the bedroom.
THIS is a home that deserves a full house tour. Beautiful!!
Oh, wow, this is different! I love it. It looks like a stage set for Alice in Wonderland or something.
More pics please :) This place is so unique. Did you do that beautiful mural on your walls yourself?
This is a wonderful space! I love the dramatic feeling that it has. It's completely unique, and very well exectuted. Very well done :) And, btw, that last photo makes me want to spend an hour in that room with you over tea!
I love the photos and would like to see more. I'm very confused by the layout, though. You have two beds? One by the mural painted wall, one by a brick wall? And there are two ladder staircases - one in white and one in dark wood? I'd love a rough floor plan or a few more wider-angle shots to visualize the whole place.
Yes please more pics! And more about that mural, and generally about everything. We are intrigued.
Ok, I'll bite. How did it acquire the nickname "the bed of death?"
The bedroom is fantastic! Same here would love to see more pictures.
taxidriver--i think photo #4 might be of the kitchen
I'm in agreement with everyone who said they loved the place and want to see more. The mural and the faux stone around the entryway are beautifully done--brava! I didn't see the answer to the question whether or not you painted those yourself? Beautiful.
That said, I'm also confused why there are two beds (although we can't really see it, the bedding is peeking out of one pic). And I have to comment on the feng shui---naming it "the bed of death" is something I would not recommend. Rename it something positive and start referring to that immediately! :) I would also paint the beam that is directly over the center of the bed in white to symbolically cut the chi energy pressing down on the bed.
yeah for mid century! And I don't need no stinkin light. Really!
Arden, you might like the author Kate Atkinson. Her book, Human Croquet, is set in a place called Arden, and she has a dark, sort of odd sense of humor you might like (based on your place and the name "bed of death".
this deserves its own tour... beautiful.. and the chair in second picture is to die for.
I love it! Definitely a dark and sexy fairytale!
I used to live in an attic appartment with no doors as well. It was one of my favorite appartments! Except, well, the bathroom, which was too short for a shower and had the toilet tucked way in the back so you had to crawl over the bathtub. Even still, it was great.
I would love to see a full house tour! Thanks for sharing.
Your bedroom made me smile. Love your sense of style. The plants and wallpaper are wonderful.
kids will love it when they see it.
love the bedspread.. where is it from>
Fantastic!!! I, too, would love to see a full house tour. The idea of putting landscape murals on the walls is brilliant (though the execution was, no doubt, not cheap).
I LOVE this. So original and inspired. Please, please do post a full tour when you can.
I love this. This is the ultimate in cozy!
whoa! Definitely want to see more!
ditto what everyone else has been saying, Full house tour PLEASE! And more photos!!! DId you paint the murals or have someone do it? I'd live there in a nano second.
Oh, this is a delight!! More, more !
This is not my style, but it is unique and very well done. I love those murals, too.
very charming place. it has that '70s single girl biba vibe.
Very romantic!
If you want a cozy look, use a cozy space. The best home I've seen on AT in a long time. It is fully original and uses space well. Makes me want to throw out my MC furniture and start over.
So nice to see something that is a little out of the norm for AT, and I loved the quote from the step-mother.
For those who are confused about the bed situation, it appears to me that the bed that is against the brick wall is the sleeping loft tucked away above the main living/dining room (aka the "bed of death"). The dark wood ladder leads to this sleeping loft. The actual bedroom is the room with the murals, and the pale, painted ladder in this room leads to the roof deck.
Mesmerizing! As many have stated before me, I would also love to see a full house tour!
Wow wow wow--THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your very kind comments--you have made my day! :)
I didn't even know this was posted until a friend just emailed me that he'd see it. (I had submitted these in hopes of having it get a full house tour from the AT staff, but I will take whatever I can get as I am thrilled to have my place in the company of so many spaces that I personally admire.)
To answer your questions:
The murals were painted by Jill Pabich
http://www.findamuralist.com/Massachusetts/jill-pabich-salem.php
I highly rec. her--I showed her photos of paintings I liked, and she came up with something that worked in the space.
There are 2 beds - one is in a sleeping loft, one is in the light-filled room w/the murals.
Coachleader: The bed spread is a duvet cover from Brocade Home (purchased recently, still available, and on sale to boot!) [see below]

VenusV is right: the dark ladder goes to the sleeping loft/bed of death, the light one goes to a roof deck (if AT does a fuller house tour, the deck may also be worthy of its own photos as it has it's own theme that is different from the rest).
Littelhouser: thank you for the book rec.
Lastly, I want to give credit to the person who took the photos: LARA KIMMER (I feel bad she's not credited, as she is a professional, and I really didn't realize they would post the photos w/o contating me first--sorry Lara!)
Oh and my place is going on the market in April, so I imagine the realtor's will post more photos somewhere for those who want to see the kitchen.
Wow, this is amazing. It's like a cozy goth cocoon, which I know doesn't make sense at all but trust me, it's a compliment.
so wonderfully luxurious and charmingly bohemian (in the real sense)
Love it!
Dreamy!

Now this apartment is definitely worthy of swooning!
I want it...
Hi all! I took the photograph of Arden's apartment and I recently did a post about her place on my blog - where I also show some photographs that weren't posted here:
http://larakimmerer.typepad.com/lk_weblog/2010/03/ardens-place.html
Amazing. Love the bedroom mural - shocked and awed.
Wow! Great photography of a wonderfully atmospheric apartment. This home is like a Dutch still life supersized & translated to three dimensions.
As I was clicking through the pics, I half expected Johannes Vermeer himself to step out of the chiaroscuro & take a bite out of one of those pears.
Very, very cool!

^ If anyone knows anyone looking to buy an Ikea-free condo in the S. End, it's currently on the market.
p.s. Hi Proper Bostonian- to answer your question, I earn a living as a graphic designer, so I know more about fonts and PMS colors than interior composition and light! :)
Why doesn't your place have its own complete HOUSE TOUR? Not enough photos? Work in progress? It's WAY too good for just a House Call ... So refreshing! Thank you for sparing us another square shelf Ikea bookcase! THANK YOU for avoiding de rigueur deer antlers -- or any of the trendy variations on taxidermy cliches which might have been tempting in this context. I disagree with FengShuiByFishgirl's FengSh*t-Incorrect problem with "the bed of death". Her school of Fishgirls should get a sense of humor, something your home clearly demonstrates. MORE!!!
Why thank you so much "coarsetalk"--I would love it if my place got a full-on house tour, but it wasn't selected for one. Maybe if I add some antlers and re-submit... ;)
The pictures are absolutely beautiful of this living space. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to walk into it, and see it in person. I, like all the others that have posted, would love to see more. Lovely, just lovely
This wall mural is amazing :) If you're more into cute and fun, check out my artist page: http://www.rogerwhiting.com
Hi Roger - I just checked out your site - great stuff - very fun!
