Are Rugs on Wall-to-Wall Carpeting Really that Bad?

Good Questions

Q: My husband is adamantly against laying an area rug over our wall-to-wall berber carpeting. The problem is that it is ecru, and when we bought it, I insisted it would weather well. Fast forward two years, with two kids and a dog... despite a "no shoes in the house" rule, it looks REALLY BAAAAAAAAD now. Like, "ew." I wish we had put an area rug(s) over it to protect it, but I don't think it's too late to clean it and add a rug now. Any suggestions for something that makes sense over the wall-to-wall carpet? I need help converting my hubs into a believer.
