This weekend I will be converting our dining area into a workspace. We live in a typically small San Francisco apartment where our living room was divided into living and dining uses. And while I love having a dining table, I realized that we eat at it about 4 times a year (I know, shame on us) while I'm working all times of the year. What are you planning to accomplish this weekend?
Any recent DIYs or Before & Afters that you've seen that have you inspired? Are you updating your lighting as part of the Spring Cure? Have all of these wonderful Small, Cool spaces made you rethink the current layout and use of your small space?
We would love to hear about your plans. Also, be sure to add any DIY, Before & After or other photos of your space to our SF Flickr Group Pool as we love to see what are readers are up to.
Bon weekend!

Nomade Express Slee...
Planting annuals!
I feel like every weekend is spent tackling projects!
This weekend: paint living rooms walls, crown molding & window trim.
Arranging and hanging some vintage frames I bought this past weekend!
Oh my list is long this weekend. First up, I need to do a stucco repair on the front porch as birds are starting to build nests in that cavity. Sticking with the front porch, I plan to install a new light fixture. Moving in the house, I plan to rehab the window to my skylight and hopefully install it. The vestibule and foyer both need some priming. I need to rekill the vegetaion on the hill in prep for the herb garden going in there. Apparently, I think the word "weekend" means "five days off"
creating a stylish "please use the OTHER door" sign to post on the (unusable) front door that is frighteningly close to the road.
I have an old mental desk that I absolutely love and have been planning to paint for some times (actually, a few years) and I never actually did it because I kept changing my mind on the color - the other day I had an epiphany and now know EXACTLY what color I want to paint it and I plan to strike while the mental iron is hot! Although, I'm not looking forward to the whole cleaning, sanding the rust off, etc part of it - but wish me luck!
making a desk out of a raw walnut slab i bought on ebay and the vika table legs from ikea.
that's a "metal" desk - not a "mental" desk - I know how you guys are about grammer - sorry:)
Can you post an "After" picture after the conversion?
I'm thinking about converting our dining room into an office too. We rarely eat over there esp. after my husband occupied the dining table with his work stuff. So I think this may be a good idea too.
I am hoping to sell the items I have posted on Craigslist and be able to make some room in my house to rearrange! I need to repaint my living room and add another coat to the hallway. Next weekend, I will paint the bedroom. Lots to do! And then... there's that wedding all day tomorrow... luckily my weekend starts at midnight tonight and continues until 1 pm Wednesday. I work 10 hours shifts (1p-12a) W-Sa and was able to score this saturday off for the wedding... Gives me time to do what I need. ;)
I'm planning on taking apart my 7.5 x 3.5 solid wood 1930's aeronautical drafting table. I'm moving abroad for a year and am trying to get my house ready for tenants! Next week, tackle the GARAGE!!!!
:) Meg
I too will be crossing my fingers to sell my items on craigslist. I have a vintage kitchen table/chairs that worked fantastically when we had a dedicated dining room. Now that I have an eat-in kitchen in a 600sf apartment, I can no longer accomodate a 10 person dining table.
Also, I will continue my spring purge of unnecessary closet items, creating a cat bed out of an old suitcase and some short table legs from Lowe's...and hopefully designing the platform bed my father will be making for me.
good luck to everyone and their weekend warrior lists!
oh and how could i forget? there's a clothing swap in des moines tomorrow so i will be taking all my old clothes, swapping them for new and making some DIY clothes/accessories.
can't wait!
working on refinishing a Thonet-lookalike chair and midcentury coffee table I pulled off the street (separate incidents), hanging some artwork and trying to organize the office.
last weekend it was building and installing extra special window boxes!.. pictures on my blog: http://projectrowhouse.blogspot.com/ :)
but this spring air is energizing - we were just discussing "what project should we do this weekend?" possibly sealing exposed brick..
Wow, lots of busy bees out there! Hope you all plan to share photos if your projects. If you happen to be from outside of the SF area, just list your city in the title of the photos and I'll be sure to share with the other cities!
This weekend I'm painting the insides of all my kitchen cabinets - Hopefully will get to the outsides as well and installing hardware....
...if not then next weekend - then the following weekend, patching and painting the kitchen walls.
To finish it off, I intend to go to Heath Ceramics in Sausalito and pick up some seconds/overstock for a brand-new tile backsplash!
I'm cleaning out a closet so that my parents can visit and have a place for their stuff in our 600 sf place.
all the shoe-organizer uses inspired me to make a mini-version for all of our medicine. We currently keep all vitamins, ibprofen, nite time cold and flu meds, etc. in a shoe box and it is overflowing! I think I will hang it on the inside door of the cabinet under our lavatory.
I also plan on making a manly gun-holster for my husbands' 45. I am not a big fan of it laying out in the open on the nightstand with all the books/water/glasses, etc. I think I have seen this before, a "holster" that hangs off the side of the mattress. Should be a good use of fabric scraps?
Last weekend we offloaded our monstrous tv and its stand and now we have all of this new free space! I think I will take a moment to dance around my living room! Next month we'll get ourselves a shiny new flatscreen (c:
My parents are coming to town to deliver my office furniture along with some gardening supplies and cuttings, so this weekend will be spent finally putting my office together and sprucing up my oh-so-blah atrium and front planting bed. Plus, my office makeover is just in time to enter Unplggd's iPad office contest. I'm so excited! :)
I'm installing the new Asterix [mid century modern] light fixture I got at Rejuvenation!! I lusted after it for months. There goes a big chunk of my yearly bonus. Woo Hoo!!!
After purging my closet last weekend (and offloading the detritus at Goodwill), I'm going to buy a few well-chosen items of clothing and some new construction-site boots (glamorous, non?). Then my mom and I are pow-wowing as to the plan of attack for end-tables/lamps for my living room, which is slowly but surely being upgraded from college furnishings to "big kid" furnishings, and possibly moving a VERY HEAVY custom steel bookcase from one end of the living room to the other.
I am going to attempt to trim the width on some salvaged bamboo blinds.
Can anyone suggest an easy way to do this?
When I trimmed my matchstick blinds I used scissors, and I could not feel the thumb on my hand for several months afterwards.
Home decor is not for wimps.
Cleaning is my biggest project right now :) My husband won't let me touch any project until I help do that! Ugh!
planning the entryway!
I am hemming and ironing (again) the linen drapes I made for the living/dining room. I'm loving the way the light filters through the weave.
supposedly the hubby is going to work on putting the finishing touches on his work bench! then we'll be on PROJECT overload with all that's lined up! i secretly think he's putting it off because he knows it's the calm before the storm :) jk! he LOVES projects! cheers
Taking the big pile of donations to good will & tackling my mould issue in the bathroom.. its way out of control!
finish assembling an ikea cabinet so that my towels can finally hide behind pretty doors. and dumping bags n bags of unused clothing at Goodwill!
Replacing the window sash hardware and refinishing the window and frame.
I'm hoping to do some ikeahacking this weekend. We need more storage in our apartment in order to actually END this unpacking process. :)
Finishing up this ART WALL I've done on my wall - it's fantastic and it's just about finished I will post it on my blog on Monday. I also plan to do some gardening and some BBQ'ing as well. Have a great weekend everyone.
I'll be stripping a desk that I nabbed at a yardsale last weekend for $8! It is exactly what I've been searching for minus the paint it's acquired over the past 60 years! I cannot wait to see it finished & in place.
Complete house spring clean. All closets, basement, windows... The list keeps growing.
I would love to do an Ikea trip too.
oh my you all are just soooo busy!! I am going to take a nap tomorrow because I am so tired from reading all the fun stuff you have to do. Darn, now I feel lazy LOL. Anyway, I can't wait to see the change over.
Have fun guys!
i'm restoring a 1960's Hercules road bike (originating from Britian). so far i've taken it all apart, and now it's time to clean everything, put on new tires, peddles and switch out the saddle. trying to make it rideable by monday! whew!
Man oh man! Am I tackling a project this weekend!!
I'm doing a "Big Purge." My husband and I got married about eight months ago, and moved in together seven months ago. But since then, we've never really consolidated and thinned our combined STUFF. So this is the weekend.
I've already cleared most of the first floor (things that have a good "home" can stay, everything else is in the backyard). Once everything's out, it's deciding what to toss, donate, sell, and keep. The keep pile will be ruthlessly thinned, keeping only what will realistically fit in the house.
It's grueling work, but the results (even so far) will be so, so worth it!
Putting in screens (the bugs have arrived), organizing/purging my kitchen pantry and cookware storage, and cleaning the basement. Or, sitting on the couch eating Nutella out of the jar while listening to the rain and reading a book and thinking about how much longer I can procrastinate.
I planted two birch saplings in the yard yesterday. (My weekend is split this week -- Friday off Saturday on, Sunday off...)
Sunday is the first flea market of the year, assuming it doesn't rain. You never know WHAT that could mean!
I had yesterday off, and a lot already happened. My parents bought new furniture, so they dropped off their existing Scandinavian cabinets at my place. It's a ripple effect and I'm biting my nails, trying to figure out how to re-arrange and what to get rid of with the new arrivals.
My husband and i also finally got a bed through Craigslist. We've been just doing the box spring on floor and mattress for many, many years. Last night we set it up and slept like, er, grown-ups.
I also cleaned the bathroom.
The rest of this weekend: I'm going to put my house to-do list in order. I have it set up by each area. There are things to do or things to get for each area, and it helps me prioritize.
Having house guests in July, so we are slowly aiming to have things in good shape by then. Not perfect, comprehensive, but good and fine.
This weekend I'm cleaning the kitchen, toss old food and planting an herb garden.
Finished painting the dining room!
(Benjamin Moore Ashwood Moss - seen at AT a long time ago.)
My husband volunteered to take photos for Rebuilding Together, San Francisco. I drove; he shot, photos, that is,of 3 work sites--a group home near Third and Gilman; a home on Bridgeview; and a huge project at Thurgood Marshall High School. Very worthwhile endeavors.
Today: Home Depot for materials for tomorrow. Sloat gardens for plants for tomorrow, pull weeds (ivy) in backyard, re-pot rosemary, irish moss & succulents, pot peonies. Made a lamp out of a wine bottle.
Tomorrow: 9am: Caulk new picture rail molding, paint picture rail molding. 10am:Pick up newly framed picture. Get more potting soil. Look for shade for lamp. 11am: Re-pot more succulents. Plant snap dragons and violas. Clean up gardening area. 2pm: Nap 3pm: Maybe get to hang picture! If I'm not too exhausted, rehang freshly washed curtains, add window film to bathroom window, kitchen windows (which just look in on my laundry room) and front door. 6pm: get ready for work Monday am!
Thanks for helping me plan my day!
Finished our entryway/stairwell. Today we're assembling our PAX wardrobes for our downstairs storage room that my hubby just finished! One step at a time...it's coming along! Deadline to finish the house...May 11th...houseguests!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to several more weekends of weekend projects until then!!!!
Just finished a two day garden project. Planted 11 8' Foxtail palms, 25 liriope plants, moved 20' of echinicha to a less sunny spot, weeded 30' of blanket flowers I started from seed, ran drip irrigation to all the palms and topped my herb garden before the basil and cilantro had a chance to bolt. All in prep to leave my southwest Florida base at the end of May and hit the road for Oregon! I'm soooorrrre!
I filled in lots of tack holes inh the holes that were left by a previous tenant. Tedious but totally worthwhile.
