Q: We're still in the process of decorating our living room and i'm having a hard time finding an area rug that ties my colours together. I think the perfect rug is the orange festival rug from Anthropologie but they don't ship rugs to Canada (neither does Overstock). So can anyone help me find the perfect area rug? And just so you know, we are also planning on painting the walls grey. Thank you in advance!

Where in Canada are you?
Sometimes Pottery Barn has decent stuff...surprisingly.
Do the Anthropologie stores in Canada carry rugs? Or could they order one in for you? I've only ever been to the Don Mills (I think) one, and I can't remember if they had rugs.
We have the most beautiful rugs at Company C. I think th e Yuri or Yukata would look nice in this room.

Lowes rug link.
i bought a similar one, happy with it.
I see a couple of those rugs on ebay. If you have some time I'd wait and see if the one in the size you want comes up.
Although I usually prefer rugs over bare floors, I have to say that the room looks beautiful as is. In fact, adding a rug might make the room look a bit cluttered.
By the way, can you please tell me what kind of flooring you have and how it is finished? It's really beautiful!
It's pretty pricey, but the Slade Rug would look great in that room.

I had one before moving out of NY and looked great on the hardwood floors.
I've seen some nice ones at Home Depot and (don't laugh) but also in the Sears catalogue.
As a side note, somebody in the US could start a business (I'm sure they already have) acting as a middle-man for us Canadians who can't get websites to deliver to us.
Interesting that Paulina thinks that the pictured rug would be best for her space - I don't see it, and neither would she when it's under that big wooden coffee table...
I'm sure there are a number of local rug & carpet stores in her community that sell quality rugs - oftentimes local stores will even let clients take 1-2 rugs home on a "tryout" basis (with a credit card number on hand, of course)
BTW - US retailers often won't ship to Canada as there are frequently additional duties and taxes levied for sending certain types of items north of the border.
Kudos to you for wanting an area rug, and for understanding what it will accomplish, even with gorgeous floors... it will turn your collection of individual pieces into a furnished room.
Does Elte sell rugs? Canadian Tire?
Check the ads in Canadian House & Home.
And, unsolicited and imho, you have one too many side tables.
Do you have a friend in the US that you could have it shipped to, and you could go for a visit? I think that rug is awesome!
I have too many side tables too - because I want to enjoy my living room and have a place at parties for friends to place their drinks.
Paulina - how about a run over the border? Where in Canada do you live - that would give us a better idea of what stores to suggest.
If you do a run over the border - here are the duty rules -Import duties are currently at 6.5% for hand-knotted rugs and 12.5% for hand-woven rugs (or Kilims).
-Additionally, goods imported into Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Newfoundland and Labrado will incur a Harmonized Sales Tax of 13% (this is inclusive of 5% GST).
-For other provinces, a minimum of 5% GST will be applied.
-Taxes are applied to the Canadian dollar value of the goods, including any duty applied to the goods.
-DHL/FedEx/UPS will handle all customs clearance and related procedures and collect any applicable fees/taxes from customers upon delivery
I'm all for having a place to put a drink, too (assuming I ever put mine down!!!) but anyone sitting on either of the two red chairs can reach a surface in at least two, if not three directions (pretty sure the coffee table is close enough, or could be...)

fabulous selection
I also don't think the Anthropologie rug suits your space. I would go with something simple (to avoid looking cluttered) and bright (since floors and furniture are dark). I have and love this (it's also on sale):

If you're in the West, check out the higher-end (*sigh*) stores like Chintz and Company. They often have some really nice stuff, or have access to really lovely carpets.
A lot of the materials available to you will depend on WHERE you are in Canada. ... but all the major cities have design stores with access to large catalogues of carpets, even if they don't have any on-hand.
Sadly Ontario also has HST.
It would depend on where she lives. Where I live in Canada, I cannot even buy furniture of any sort, let alone a beautiful rug.
Paulina, your room is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Are you sure you need to paint the walls gray? I think the room looks great as-is because the taupe/beige walls add some warmth. I think the taupe/gray/orange color scheme looks fantastic! I also agree with the earlier poster that the Anthropologie rug would be mostly hidden in your current configuration (since the orange aspects would be under your coffeetable).
I did a quick google search for "rugs canada" and found a bunch of retailers. I don't know what cost considerations come into play, but I found these gorgeous rugs:

Unbelievably beautiful but $$$$$$$$$$$$$
If you feel the need for an area rug, I'd actually choose a neutral jute rug. To tie the room together a bit better, I'd use artwork (a large scale canvas painting over the gray couch might be nice) and brighter throw pillows on that greenish sofa.
The room could use more texture, which could be implemented by switching out the lamp shade and adding some kind of table runner for the coffee table.
"Canadian Tire?"
I didn't believe it until I looked it up -
- I would have assumed they only sold tires!!!
Don't know where you are in Canada, but check your closest US border town for a shipping & receiving service so you can order the rug you want. I'm in Vancouver and have used Hagen's in Blaine. They charge less than $5 to take your delivery for you. When it comes, they call you and you drive down to pick it up. Depending on who you get, the border guard might not even make you pay duty to bring it back with you to Canada.
The great thing about using something like Hagen's is that you can open up your package right there and if you don't like it, you can send it right back through them. Since many US retailers offer free return shipping on items shipped in the US, this is a big bonus!
I'm also in Vancouver and I use Point to Point in Point Roberts to collect US mail/parcels. Point to Point are also a freight forwarder, so if you want to pay the big bucks, you can have it shipped there and then they will ship it to you.
Hey Paulina,
I've had the exact same problem...delivery to Canada! I've been searching around the past few days and found www.selectrugscanada.ca. I haven't ordered from them yet, but them seem to offer a wide selection, and a price guarantee. They claim to have "the widest selection of online rugs in Canada." They also claim that their rugs are those featured on Extreme Home Makeover every week. (Why an American show would use a Canadian distributor I'm not sure). Tehir return policy says you can return a rug for a $30 shipping fee within 30 days. Let us all know where you find the best options. I'm looking myself too!
befsp: too funny! Canadian Tire is THE home and auto store... for the average do-it-yourselfer.
Um, Paulina, this is going to sound really weird, but what about cowhide? The Calgary Stampede has a bunch of "western living" vendors selling cowhides at really low rates. ... and if that's not enough ('cause I know that wouldn't sell most people on it), hides-as-rugs rather frequently make their way into home decor magazines, and not always in the "rustic cabin" theme-home either. Elle Decor's May issue, for example, has zebra in a couple really elegant home displays. (the cowhides are from here: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/cowhide/9117-323.aspx?feature=Product_1 they have stores in Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg at least).
Otherwise, I'd suggest checking out (as was already said) Canadian magazines like Canadian House & Home, or Avenue if you're in Calgary or Edmonton (www.avenuecalgary.com and www.avenueedmonton.com). Plus a lot of the major cities will have house and home tours (particularly in the summer) as fundraisers, like they do for the Alberta Ballet, you'd find tonnes of resources at those events.
p.s. Chintz and Company is here, from my earlier post: http://chintz.com/
I just remembered that a friend of mine who has an Etsy store featured a giveaway courtesy of CSN Rugs! They ship to Canada--I'm just not sure how painful the shipping costs are. Here's the link: http://www.csnrugs.com/Browse-All-Rugs-C7469.html
