I've been gardening in containers for a few years but this year my 2-yr-old was able to help me. We live in an apartment with a relatively small balcony, but I still wanted to create a special place for him that he'd enjoy spending time in. The result was a "toddler snacking garden" (plus my herb garden) with a few magical touches and a play space for little hands.

I think that's really sweet that you allow your son to play in your "garden". Even though it looks like you have the view to a parking lot, it's nice that he can see through. My patio is something like yours but we all have solid walls so little ones feel like they are caged.
Nice job.
this gives me a GREAT birthday party idea. love!
