In the smallest homes we've lived in, open shelving has been the most necessary. It can be a challenge to prevent open shelving from looking cluttered and messy. SFGirlByBay is currently in the inspiration stage of adding just this kind of shelving to her home.
Wishing to add shelves above a beautiful vintage stove, she's gathered quite a few inspiring images of other people's successful shelf appointments. We've included our three favorites, but it's worth taking a look at the rest of them for some motivating images of organized shelving.

White Enamel Four-P...
Love the plants in the white hanging jars. These are beautiful ideas.
All apartments in my building have open shelves in the kitchens. Sure, they're useful storage space and when they're arranged nicely they can look nice enough...
...however they're also major dust & airborne grease collectors - a significant pain in the butt.
IMO, there's a very good reason for cabinets with doors - but if enjoy dusting and cleaning, have at it!
I installed stainless steel shelving & rails above my stove and ripped out a cabinet to install open shelving & rails above my sink. I haven't had any issues with dust or grease. Most of the items above the sink are dishes and glasses that are used daily. Above the stove are pots & pans that are used a lot. Anything that's less frequently used just gets a wash before using it. Nothing is so infrequently used that it accumulates gunk. I also don't fry foods or have a gas range.
Personally, I love my open shelving. It makes my kitchen look larger. Things are are accessible. It actually increased my storage space, and I still have enough enclosed cabinets to hide things.
couldn't they have hid the cord to that cliplight better? Boy is that bothering me
Who makes the shelves in that 1st photo- or are they custom. Anyone recognize them?
@brave little toaster: they're custom made, apparently a company called hyllteknik. those all white nordic houses: http://www.skonahem.com/inspirerande-hem/hemreportage/vitt-sa-in-i-norden/index.xml
Those white hanging things the plants are in... I see them used for planters and school supplies in a lot of these pics. Where are they from?
Kendall, I believe the product in 3rd pic is IKEA asker series.
The second picture is a cheater with all that storage down below. If only my storage options looked this pretty (renter).
