Once their MetroCards are used up or expired, many New Yorkers toss them aside in the subway stations. Artist Nina Boesch sees those ubiquitous blue and yellow cards as the perfect medium for her upcycled mosaics.

The New York-based artist collects discarded MetroCards and uses them in her collages of the city's landscapes and cultural icons, from skylines and subway tunnels to taxi cabs and coffee cups.

The limited color palette doesn't seem to limit her imagination — Boesch uses the blacks and whites to create signs and maps; the oranges and yellows to depict taxis and trains; and the blues to illustrate the water and sky.
