Blank rooms are a bitch, amiright? But it's also equally hard to look at your current decor and have the vision to see it as a completely different space. If you need to do some decorating but are having a hard time getting started, try this secret trick that always helps me focus my thoughts and figure out what I really want to do with my room.

Ask yourself:

What is the purpose of this space?

Sometimes this is easy to answer, say, in the kitchen, a room with a very obvious purpose. Other times, it's a little more murky and that's where the decor hesitation and doubt always wells up for me.

So if you have a room (like a living room) with a less-defined purpose, your job is to give it one. Besides "living," its purpose could be something like, "a place to relax and connect with friends and family." Then you know you need to make a space with lots of good light, calm colors and comfy seating arranged to promote conversation.

See? Taking the time to determine purpose brings to mind all the things you'll need to achieve that purpose — both physical, practical things like furniture, and also stylistic choices that will give you the right feel. It's a simple way to get you thinking and moving in the right direction.

Do you already do this? How else do you get moving when you feel stuck?
