"Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums." - Milo Baughman
This sofa has been copied a hundred times and for all the right reasons. It's a great modern design with lightness of frame balanced against a cozy, deep seat. First created by Milo Baughman in the 60's for Thayer Coggin, it has been brought back into production and can now only be found at official Thayer Coggin dealers. Which means you've got one more reason to get beyond The Crate, The Pottery, The Room and The Mitchell.
Milo Ray Baughman Jr. (1923-2003) was one of the biggies in modern furniture design in the second half of the 20th century. Often copied, he designed for many companies, but was most famous for his work with Thayer Coggin of Highpoint NC, for which he designed pieces from 1953 until his death. "His uniquely American designs were forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious and affordable" (Wikipedia).
The collection the sofa is from has the undistinguished name, Design Classics, and comes in many configurations, including a matching armchair. The sofa comes in three lengths, has a wood frame, the choice of stainless or wood legs and polyblend down cushions. The best part is the price, which starts at $1990 if you find a dealer with the "special promotion." ASK FOR IT. If you are in NYC, the only place to go for this is Rico Espinet's shop RICO. You can also find others through this Thayer Coggin weblink.
