Hans Wegner just won't quit. While the great Danish designer passed away last January at the age of 92, Room and Board just unearthed one of his old designs as the star or their new 2008 collection. It's called the CH28 Sawbuck Chair, and it's not even listed on Carl Hansen's site. We got a personal tour of the new collection yesterday and snapped these pics.
Apparently the folks at R&B were looking for new ideas and the Carl Hansen company, which has exclusives on all Wegner's designs, offered up this one, which they hadn't made in over 25 years (since 1951 - imagine how many more they must be sitting on!). R&B liked it and got an exclusive on it for one year, which means that no one else will be selling it in 2008.
The cool thing about this chair is how edgy it is. It's right up there with his moon-shaped Shell Chair and his Star Trek-like ch445 lounge chair (below), and it's just as comfortable.
We sat in it and were amazed at how Wegner just nails comfort every time. Despite the changing shapes and materials, his chairs always hold you and you don't want to get up. And this one is a very cool/kooky mix of shapes and materials.
The Sawbuck is made of an oak frame and has a curved walnut seat, back and lozenge-like armrests. It sits low to the ground and cradles you as you sit back into it. If you're looking for a novel, new unique chair that will also last your entire lifetime (and beyond), this is for you.
