Our February Jumpstart Project winning entries will be announced next week. Your reader votes will determine the winner in each category but to help round out the voting on Apartment Therapy, we've invited Matthew Haly of The Furniture Joint, who is also one of the city's premier upholsterers...
We've known Matthew for years, as we've referred many readers to his unique furniture restoration shop, where he also teaches classes, but we've gotten to know him even better lately when he helped us make cushions for our sofa and we read his book from cover to cover: Matthew Haly's Book of Upholstery. If you want a young, hip approach to this old profession, this is a great new resource:
Matthew began his upholstery career over twenty years ago, having learned all aspects of the trade at a local upholstery company in Hamilton, New Zealand where he grew up. Eventually, Matthew carried his upholstery skills literally across continents having also worked in upholstery studios for several years in Australia and Canada.
It was in November of 2000 when he decided to open the doors of The Furniture Joint in New York City and apply his upholstery skills to a self-owned business.
For February Jumpstart Month Matthew is contributing a fabulous package prize of three signed copies of his new book (one for you and two more to share with your friends):
"The book us chock full of straightforward projects, complete with stunning color photographs and useful step-by-step illustrations to accompany the how-to text. Plus, only Matthew gives you tips on how to pick out worthwhile furniture for restoration. Matthew Haly's Book of Upholstery is a thorough primer on sewing for the home, giving you all the know-how you need to turn the old chair you salvaged from a yard sale into a custom piece that adds real style to your home. In addition, upholstery is always more fun when listening to great music so Matthew is including three copies of his latest album, "Delicate Existence of Rhythm". Enjoy and Good luck!!"
