Justin Green, Director of Build It Green NYC! was another of 4 presenters/panelists at last Thursday's AT Design Meetup on Green @ Home.

Justin recognized the massive amount of waste that comes out of the construction industry, and created a non-profit to try to save a fraction from the landfill and get it back into people's homes, all the while raising money for environmental education...

According to Justin, 40 tons of garbage is generated daily through NYC's construction industry. Demolition companies, contractors, DIY owners/builders get a tax write off by donating to Build It Green. Consumers then have the opportunity to buy the salvaged materials at 10-15% of their original cost!

Justin helped the AT offline audience to understand that reuse is a great way to create and perpetuate a green home. But it takes the motivation or need to pay less; the openness to create a home with what is available; and the desire for a unique interior design. At this point, Justin says that they see a lot of homeowners and bar owners looking for ways to save money and create something special.

That being said, Build It Green has everything from lighting to doors, file cabinets to tiles, high end kitchen cabinetry to wood flooring. Taking a trip there can feel like being in designer heaven with a sense of adventure. You never know what you will find--exactly what you need, or the perfect solution that you didn't think you were looking for...
