So there's a 6" hole in the floor between your apartment and the nice folks below you. Sure you've called the landlord, but since he's not returning your call, nothing's being done about it. Well, you're not the only one. There is always a landlord who drops the ball — so what can you do? Enter NYC's Worst Landlords Watchlist. The first place to check when looking for a new place to stay!
Curious to see if your landlord fits the bill? You can check out all the requirements over at the Public Advocate for the city of New York, though here's an abbreviated version:
For a landlord to be added to the Watch List, they must own a building with fewer than 35 units with an average of at least three open, serious violations (B and C violations) per unit. Larger buildings must have an average of at least two open, serious violations (B and C violations) per unit.
If the time has come to file an official complaint about your own landlord, just head on over to this simple form and get things filled out. There's no shame in laying it all out on the table. If you've ever had to suffer through renting from someone who isn't on the ball, others can be warned!
If you'd like to see the list thus far of landlords that are a bit on the slummy side, check things out for yourself. Landlords are listed by area, though you can also search by borough or your landlord's name. Each has a listing of the number of violations and the code letters that they are up against. There's some serious infractions and we only hope that this pressure starts to do some good!
