Q: My 15 month old daughter just loves her alphabet blocks. She and my husband have so much fun with the alphabet song and letter identification. We thought it would be fun to have some flashcards around, but I can't seem to find any that I like. Have you guys ever featured alphabet or basic word flashcards that are a little nicer than the blah ones they sell at at teacher supply stores?

Editor: We sure have Anne! We wrote about the ones pictures above here and have featured several others (simply search by "flashcard" in our archives). Readers - what are your favorite good-looking ABC flashcards?

Right now we're really liking the ones from EBoo- they were created by a reading specialist too so on the back they have words with each letter. They're really nice looking too.
I have a baby and we currently use these to decorate the room, but will use them as flashcards when she's older. They are also a floor puzzle on the backs. They are truly beautiful images and very hard cardboard.

I like this simple, modern set from Bob's Your Uncle:

Flashcards seem a bit too much like work for a fifteen month old baby, IMHO. How about a really nice ABC board book? We have this one, which has gorgeous paintings, and one principal image starting with each letter, but also several smaller ones as well. There's also an overarching story. A very charming book and my sixteen-month-old loves it.

Melissa Sweet is my favorite children's illustrator and these alphabet cards by her are really cute.

Wow-thanks Ohdeedoh for featuring my question and thanks to everyone who responded with links! I am LOVING all of them...now--how to pick?
We really like the Eric Carle animal alphabet flash cards (purchased on amazon for about $10). They are quite sturdy and colorful and I like that we can work on animals at the same time. There is another line with animals on amazon that looked nice as well.
To pencils - I know what you mean but we have found that giving a younger toddler flashcards can be really great. You can lay out a couple each day and work on those 4 or 5, you can ask "which is the letter D" and they can bring it, whatever. It's more hands on than a book.
Fhmom--I don't "work on things" with my sixteen-month-old daughter. I don't believe in putting pressure on her like that. She has a long school career ahead of her, but for now I want her to be a baby, with no need to know her letters at this age.
Pencils- I totally get what you're saying, but I find that little ones actually love to learn stuff like that. We have a pillow that has logos of all the hockey teams, and one of them is a big "B" and I taught my 10 month old how to say it and whenever I ask him where the B is he points. He seemed very excited and honestly always looks proud of himself when he shows me. After that I taught him the other teams on the pillow and he really enjoyed it.
Babies minds are like little sponges, they love to soak up knowledge, but you have to give them the opportunity!
We have the julie morstad ones!! my 15 month old one loves it as much as i do. She can spend a lot of time just watching the illustrations (and making "comments" about them), which are incredible cool and beautiful.
My favorite are the one that the author/illustrator Jane Brett has on her website for free- http://janbrett.com/activities_pages.htm.
The Jan Brett flashcards are great! Thanks for posting that link!
