060110showthumb-01.jpgWe love Show. Planted in the heart of Los Feliz, the store has an eclectic mix of reupholstered furniture, great lighting and a slew of home accessories. The store is small in size, but spacious with inspiring items, and we can spend hours in here because everything is so beautifully displayed by owner Brad Cook...

Since our visit in 2005, Show continues to offer fun finds for your home decor--check out what's new after the jump!

010710jillspaint-01.jpgHidden off the main thoroughfare of Glendale Blvd. in Atwater Village and calling themselves "your new neighborhood paint and painting supply store", Jill's Paint is a dealer of fine paints and even finer service. After hearing so many positive remarks about Jill's and their line of premium and environmentally-friendly paint brands, and with a much needed living room wall and trim paint refresh project in mind, we decided to head eastward over the 5 freeway and see for ourselves what all the brouhaha was all about.

Since our visit in 2006, Jill's has undergone renovation and expansion. Check out what's new after the jump!

022609_roomservice.jpgDuring a recent search for a modern dining table Abby reminded us about Room Service, a great source for modern furniture with a relaxed swanky Palm Springs vibe (where they coincidentally have another showroom). The showroom on 3rd carries all manner of mid century modern inspired sofas, armchairs, shelving and accessories at better prices than we've been able to find anywhere else. The staff is incredibly helpful and can put together a custom order if you don't see exactly what you're looking for. Plus a huge bonus is that not only is everything made in the US, it's made right in downtown LA.

092308cleanmicro01.jpgIn the past we've posted about cleaning sponges by nuking them in the microwave. However, one ATLA reader had a good question:

How do you get the stinky sponge smell out of the microwave?

cut-bamboo.jpgWe have been talking up the benefits of bamboo flooring for a while now. We were so into the fact that the easily grown wood (grass, actually) not only helped in stopping the depletion of forests, et al, it also looked so good.

Now we are finding that the floors are not as desirable as we thought. There are often complaints about how easily it scratches, and now there is even doubt as to whether or not the quick growing grass is in fact as super-eco as everyone once said.

Our pals at Tree Hugger have a great piece on the matter. To read more, click here.

bbimageredsofa6.19.jpg Barclay Butera Home is by far the hottest high end showroom at the Pacific Design Center.
With showrooms and retail stores in Los Angeles, Huntington Beach, North Carolina, and most recently in New York.
The showroom at the PDC is full of fab custom made furnishings and accessories.
Zak Graff, the showroom manager can help you customize any piece in the showroom to your liking from a variety of fabrics and styles, which is entirely made in Los Angeles. If you are at the PDC you should definitely check out the Barclay Butera showroom you won’t want to leave its so beautiful and there is so much to see!

CAstylemag6.14.jpgA week ago I introduced a Canadian interior design magazine called Style at Home and found this great DIY idea that I wanted to share. In this issue they took old funky animal figurines and had them painted matte white to give them a more modern look.

Perhaps spray painting them red gloss or robins egg blue could also be an alternative color to use. If you wanted to try this idea I'm sure you could use any spray paint color to match your decor - since there are so many colors now available to choose from.

Does anyone else want to share a fun DIY project or a painting idea? If so, email me! -Vanessa (aka Turquoise)

Some people have some questions, do you have the answer?

caryn.jpgMost believe owning artwork is the domain of folks living the lifestyle of champagne wishes and caviar dreams. But considering I’m living a life of Diet Coke sips and Velveeta dreams, yet surrounded by a small and gratifying collection of artwork, the truth is bringing original art into the home isn’t as far fetched as one might believe.

I had the pleasure of interviewing my friend Caryn Coleman, owner of Culver City’s sixspace gallery and founder of art.blogging.la, about the ins and outs of tapping into your J. Paul Getty on a J.C. Penny bankroll.

airswitch1.jpgAlec posted about the Airswitch TC back in November last year, but we just read that there is another version that is out now. Airswitch lamps, by Mathmos, change with movement. If you raise your hand above the fixture, it brightens, and if you lower your hand, it dims the light. The Airswitch 1 is a cool frosted white edition that looks like a science lab flask.
