Name: Azza
Location: Prospect Heights — Brooklyn, New York
I've been living on the top floor of this 2 bedroom + 2 bathrooms brownstone apartment for the past two years, and I'm finally able to show you what I have done with this sunny space! One thing that my apartment gives away about me is that I love color. Actually, I love contrasting colors. Bold colors. It has something to do with my Sun in Leo but that's another story…
My home has strong influences from the cultures and the arts of the Indian Ocean, North Africa and the Sahara Desert. I have decorated my place with pieces that I collected through out my travels to these regions, and the Flea Markets of New York and San Francisco.
I have a love affair with time, life and nature, so I tend to love everything that’s rustic, aged and handmade, and that's why you can see many elements of water, sand, salt, decay, life, sun, and plants in my home.
I'm inspired by the life of the traveler, not the one who travels for pleasure, but the one who travels for work and survival. The fisherman, the camel herder, the shepherd, the hunter, the housewife and any worker who commutes daily within their local environment, and crosses borders for business and survival.
Once special problem that I faced with the space is the lack of cabinets and drawers in the kitchen. So I solved the problem by placing a long IKEA kitchen table pantry that holds everything from spices to cookware and appliances.
Thanks, Azza!

Shaw's Original Fir...
i could see the n. african influences right away! beautiful blues and yellows, very inspirational.
This is SO pretty! I am contemplating painting my bedroom yellow, and this may have convinced me.
I love the yellow in the bedroom!! and the pieces from different countries come together well. Lovely place!
I love the sunny bedroom with an area for writing as well as a nice spot to read/knit/whatever.
Absolutely love!
the colors are beyond amazing. nice job all around. What kitchen clutter? azza has her pantry items on a kitchen island/cabinet, dry goods and other kitchen items are well organized. most nyc dwellers don't have the luxury of a pantry...kudos on a great place.
the bedroom is gorgeous!
house tour house tour house tour!!!!!! omg drroooll
Yes! HOUSE TOUR, pleeeeaaaase!!!!!
I definitely love your kitchen piece!
This is nice, but where are the "contrasting colors. Bold colors." of which you speak? I see a lot of bleached out / pastel shades and a lot of white and (shudder) some beige.
Although I really like that picture on the (beige) wall over the bed with the white coverlet.
really? that wall is light orange/yellow, not beige! the bold blue and light blue in the living room, red in the kitchen, bright yellow in the bedroom, and bright orange in the doorway aren't bold enough for you?
HOUSE TOUR! HOUSE TOUR! HOUSE TOUR! Simplicity and a refreshing lack of emphasis on Mid Century Modern make this place easy to admire.
I love the line of pictures with red frames in the kitchen, nice idea. Would love to see a house tour.
It's a nice looking place, but worthy of a house tour??? It doesn't quite seem finished to me. The colors are great and the owner's personality is showing, but.....Maybe it's the lack of curtains. I know some people don't like them, but I think they add a real decorative value to a place.
It looks very tidy except on those shelves under that kitchen table/pantry. I would definitely get some sort of box system in whatever style you like to organize and hide some of that clutter.
I love the casual/comfortable feel; also agree with coarsetalk on the "refreshing lack of Mid Century Modern" (something I struggle with :-)
Is the sofa an IKEA Ektorp? It's on my short list, and I really like how it fits with your space. That's the kind of look I'm going for: easy and accessible.
Beautiful!
Hi there,
I'm looking for a similar color palette for my LR/DR, could you tell me what paint colors you used? your place looks beautiful.
thanks.
Thanks Ruths. :)
I used Behr paints through out my apartment. For the LR, i used Tropical Holiday and Cloudy Day. For the SB, i used Pumpkin Toast, and the LB i mixed two different Behr colors, i used link a very light ginger green and left over Sahara yellow from the Kitchen yellow. Sorry but i don't remember those last two colors. :(
Good luck!!
Oh, and Behr's Stable Hay in the SB. :)
Azra, I love your decorating style. Where did the paintings come from? What are they? Your home is a favorite of mine.
Hey Cleomom, thank you and sorry for the late reply but i haven't been back to this page until today. :)
The long painting in the living room is by Ethiopian artist, Ezra Wube, and the other is by a South African artist picturing Soweto, sorry but i don't have his name.
Oh, the Soweto painting is in the small room. Then the portrait in the bathroom is by Sudanese self-taught artist Jiha.
