Now, we are not presuming that we look as cute in our winter hat as this guy, but we've been known to wear ours now and then while typing at our desk on some chilly mornings here in Chicago. As temps drop lower and lower this week, we know that we'll be feeling it as we work away in our living room. Aside from our hat wearing, hot tea and a small dog on the lap are our usual ways to hold off the chill...
...but they may fall short during this deep freeze. We'd love to know how you all cope with the cold when you are inside your home. Wool slippers? Space heaters? Please let us know in the comments below...
Amazingly cute dog in hat: Bean of BeanTown Handmade. Hat shown is $18. (Thanks, Sarahrae!)

White Enamel Four-P...
adorable dog picture alert!
A quilt, blanket and 40 lb lap dog! I wish we had a fireplace, but our house is old and it was covered before we bought it :(
My boston terrier puppy is stretched out in front of the furnace right now!
I'm so happy that my boss is out of the office, because I audibly squealed when I saw this.
Night before last, I ate dinner at the kitchen table with a blanket wrapped around me. My husband said I looked like some sort of refugee. I was just noticing this morning that I have some sort of throw in practically every room in our house. I spend a lot of time during the winter either under them, washing them to keep them free of dog hair or folding them to keep the house from looking sloppy.
putting clothes or blankets in the dryer and then wearing them. i also put my coat in the dryer when i have time and then go outside in my toasty coat, it helps.
I cannot even begin to imagine what it must feel like to be that cute.
Hot tea, comfy socks and sweatshirt, hot water bottles and my electric blanket!
The dog picture would make a great portrait on a wall!!
Great picture!
I am amazed that the photog was able to get a shot of the dog acting so calm with a hat. Knowing my boston terrier/french bulldog mix- she would literally be doing somersaults to try to get it off.
I have a fleece jacket that's got a bear face on the hood with ears and plush claws. With light blue slippers that have removable bunnies. And can often be seen with a hot cup of tea.
I used to wear this at work too till the boss's really huge square headed dog growled at me and now looks at me funny every time I'm in the room with or without my bear jacket.
My solution to the cold was to move to New Orleans 9 years ago. Works well most of the time. Other than that, ubiquitous sweatshirt hoodie, thick socks and a fleece throw under the desk to nuzzle my feets into because of cold wooden floors. I sometimes consider one of those electric foot mats, but haven't gone that route yet.
Hot Tea & Ciders
A pot of Soup on the stove or a Stew in the oven.
Fleecy sweats and thick cotton socks
Wool blankets and throws
A small space heater in the bedroom - on an automatic timer.
Soaks in the jacuzzi and Hot showers & Baths.
As a former Torontonian, I consider myself an expert on cold weather endurance. The key is close-fitting layers: knee socks, under fitted pants, tank tops under turlenecks under sweaters, etc..
Maker's Mark and my Boston named Cleveland....
most of the above, especially cooking oneself in a hot shower or bath. after getting out, you'll feel warm for quite a while in a chilly apartment.
Bacon would be pissed if we tried to put a hat like that on him. He already refuses to wear a coat. If you put a coat on him he freezes and refuses to move.
70 pound pit bull under a blanket makes a lot of hot
oh god. that's gotta be the cutest photo, ever! if only my dog would keep a hat on!
an electric blanket wotks nicely for me in my drafty old farmhouse. io do extra couch time watching designing shows
It's -10f outside my house right now, but wouldn't know it. I just turn my heat up. I refuse to be cold.
And that is THE cutest dog picture ever.
I have excellent and effective central heating; just right temperature (cue evil, vile laugh; muahahaha - I have control of the building thermostat).
that pic is so cute it makes me sick. i definitely enjoy all 20 lbs of my boston terrier keeping my lower legs warm when on the couch. or smashing himself up against my stomach or back in bed. except when he kicks me in the face.
otherwise- hot soup, hot cocoa, layered shirts, throws, and actually wearing socks (flip flops year round)
I knit myself a pair of fingerless mittens at the beginning of the cold season. I wear those while typing and turn on the space heater in the room where I'm working (with the door closed so it stays snugly!). I've been trying to use the "I need a warm, cuddly animal to keep me warm" strategy to convince my partner that we should get a pet. So far, no dice...
Having a new house, I vouch for really excellent insulation! We keep the thermostat in the low 60's when away, and upper 60's when home, and it is comfortable most all the time. I'm fond of being toasty, though, so I do have (fake) fur-lined slippers and afghans or throws wherever I'm likely to sit.
Layer, layer, layer as much as possible without making it impossible to move. When it gets very cold, my totally ugly earflap hat comes out and I start to wear leggings under my pants or over my tights.
My office is incredibly warm, so I have the opposite problem once I get to work, which is why layering is ideal. Remove a layer and add it back to get home.
When I'm able to sit down at home, I snuggle up under this unbelievably warm alpaca wool blanket my friend knitted for my husband and me for our wedding. The space heater is only brought out when we can't feel our toes.
Also, I can't get over how adorable that picture is. I really wish my puppy would sit still long enough to get a non-blurry photo!
Janel, please post more pics of Beatrix!! I keep going back to the one where she looks like a little soot ball and it always makes me smile! BTW, if you ever need a pupsitter, I am available!! :)
when i have to take the dog out, i wear 2 coats.
and lots of red wine helps too.
I typically wear layers and my down booties around the house. I'll add a beanie if it's really cold. If I'm extra cold I bring out my wool "emergency sweater". And if I'm just beyond freezing I have been known to put on my ski pants over my pajamas :) That works great!
Love this picture this dog looks so normal wearing this like yes this is hat and its Sunday..too cute.
No way- I just wrote about this on my blog a few days ago.

Those are my tips in there. A few extras:
Eat lots of spicy food.
Flannel sheets and a down comforter.
Really long showers with the bathroom door shut to keep in the steam.

Tea, sweaters, and blankets. Oh, and a husband who doesn't mind you putting your cold feet on him helps, too. :)
That doggy is so prosh...
Wesfs33, our two chihuahua mixes used to freeze and not move whenever we'd put something on them (collar, harness, coat, etc). It's better now and they're used to them, but one of them still tend to walk sideways whenever we'd put a coat on. It's funny as heck!
I wear scarves and arm warmers as a rule from November to March, as well as leg warmers and wool socks. I'm a photographer for a police agency, and often get called out to surprise events like press conferences, to ride along in police cars, or stand at the capitol and document events, regardless of the weather.
At home, I wrap up in my bathrobe and slipper socks from Bath and Body Works' winter collection of "super softest ever" or something like that. Those work wonders.
I live in a miracle (pre-war) building in NYC. I have no control over the heat. No radiators, just two riser steam pipes in the bedroom and the bathroom. It is currently 21 degrees out, with 20mph winds, and I am sitting comfortably in a tee shirt, shorts, and a pair of cashmere socks. It amazes me how effective these old thick walls are at holding the heat. That and new triple pane windows.
When the temperature drops in the City you can find me at bed time with my knit cap and wool sweater (on top of jammies) huddled in bed...oh and my pug by my side.
Most darling dog photo ever--so dignified, yet adorable. As for managing the cold, I grew up in a desert climate on the other side of the globe, so when I lived for a few years in NYC, I turned into a human popsicle every December. What kept me alive: hot showers or baths immediately followed by wrapping up in pre-warmed towels, clothes and wool socks (radiators make great warming racks), hot water bottles (note: plural) at the foot of the bed, doubling up the duvets, a warm throw in every possible location, lots of hot tea and hearty soups. Oh...and the most important one: I moved to California, although someone forgot to tell me that Northern California is not really that warm. Oh well.

lovely dog, so cute.
