Remember that mobiles over the crib should help soothe your baby, not stimulate. Save the black and white mobiles for over the changing table - black and white graphics (for newborns up to 5 months in particular) will keep them too entertained to fall asleep! Luckily, you can still be mod without resorting to a neutral color palette. Here are some great modern mobiles to get you started on your search - all of them are just one of many styles available from that brand, so click around!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Mobiles over a crib do actually have a function. The first three, which face the interesting sides toward parents, are useless. Why does this continue to be such a difficult concept for designers?
I completely agree that the first three are unsuccessful as baby mobiles. I have been creating baby mobiles for the past year and a half that are oriented specifically to be viewed from the infants point of view. I disagree that mobiles are for soothing your child. I believe that mobiles, kinetic sculptures, should stimulate the baby's senses...their eyes, hands, and feet.
I ended up making my own, because nothing "fit." Mobiles that are not too childish, that are interesting (for everyone) to look at, and fit a room that is not theme specific is not the easiest. And good luck trying to find something more on the organic side!
My daughter has the Themis mobile and loves it : )
I am so glad to see someone point out that most mobiles are not made for kids. (Who wants to see the "feet" of the mobile?) The first thing I did when looking at mobiles for my children was to look underneath the mobile. Although it is nice to have one look nice in the room, it is far more important that it look interesting to the child. If you can have both - awesome!
