Q: Hi! I am looking for a good baby monitor that comes with its own monitor but also streams to an iPhone. I've done a bit of research and found some online hack suggestions, but I am nowhere near tech-savvy enough to figure that out. Does anyone know of any that just come with this feature (I guess presumably an app you can download on your phone)?

I don't know, but it seems that a webcam pointed at the crib would be cheaper and less niche. Then you can check in online through a regular browser or a mobile browser. They're not very expensive or difficult to set up.
I was going to say what Pi said. You can buy a much better quality camera to put on your network that you can use after baby grows up. We learned that we never really needed our baby monitor. We could always here our kids through the apartment well without it.
something to check out: http://www.ispyconnect.com/
Here's an option for the iphone but I'm not sure it has its own monitor.. http://www.withings.com/en/babymonitor
My friend helped start this company and originally it was meant to only do home and business surveillance. But, after he had his first kid, he added in functionality just like what you're talking about.

I actually bought my baby an iPod touch. I put a 3 year warranty on it and a Otterbox defender case. We used AirBeam to perform voice and video monitoring to our existing iPhones and iPads. Now there is not a night cam feature - but we found we did not need to use it much. The iPod touch is used to also deliver soothing music via Pandora and Blues Clues and other educational media via Netflix. My investment will grow with her for sure. I am happy with my decision to do an iPod vs. a stand alone video system.
DropCam (http://www.dropcam.com) has HD video, plus two-way audio. Seems like a good solution that can also double as home monitor when your baby has grown out of the monitor stage.
Re:what Pi and Funstraw said, I thought the same thing and regret it. If you have an apartment, yes you probably don't need a monitor. But if you're in a house w/multiple floors, you probably do and then the webcam sucks. I found if you want the webcam to be a monitor and not JUST a way to check in occasionally, it's not practical for iphone use - the ones I looked at required that you have the app open in order to hear anything, so you had to remember to always have your phone on you with the app open and then it's draining the battery.
I ended up keeping the webcam to check in on the baby and bought a regular monitor for sound. I rely on the sound 95% of the time around the house. If she's fussing and I'm trying to decide if I should check in on her, I'll open the iphone webcam app to see if there's anything wrong. I also use it occasionally when I'm away from the house as well.
I still think Angel Care and other video monitor companies should find a way to include this feature. But until they do, I wouldn't recommend doing a webcam as your only monitor unless you're in an apartment where you can hear everything.
We have been happy with the iBaby camera and accompanying app on our iPhones and iPads. It doesn't have its own monitor, but if you wanted a separate, dedicated device you could probably get a used iPhone or touch?
Ok, I'm going to say something controversial. You don't need a baby monitor. Nope. Babies are born with built in alarm systems. If its important, you *will* hear them. I've raised two kids of my own and baby sat countless others. I have never used a monitor and if you can believe it, none of them have died or suffered. All you need is to pay attention to their needs and check up on them periodically. A visual inspection is good enough.
Just walk away from the baby monitors. Defy social pressure. Be wild and crazy. Spend your money on ice cream excursions.
I am not a crazy hovering parent (I don't think), but I think video baby monitoring is da bomb. Yes, as Khinnj says you could do a "visual inspection," but that involves opening the door and having enough light in the room that you can see the child = a chance you will wake the kiddo up.
We have a Foscam camera and use aps on our iphone, Android, and PCs. It's true that it drains your battery if you use it just as a monitor (i.e., leave it on constantly so you hear if the baby starts to cry.) We usually use it more to check in to see what the wee one is up to when we hear him with our ears. Is he crying while standing up and chewing on the crib vs. crying while still lying down? I also use it to get my fix of watching him sleep when I'm traveling for work or out to eat and there's a babysitter at home.
Foscam...
around $60, infared, audio, iphone, android, panable 4 direction...
and you can view anywhere on the net
foscam ftw.
Has anyone used the Wifi Baby monitor? It's the one we were looking at...
I only had an audio monitor and so many times I stood outside my baby's door just wishing I had a two-way mirror so I could what in the heck she was doing! There are so many other reasons to watch your child (without opening the door) than just "she's crying." Next baby is getting video FO SHO.
