We're always coming across this kind of list, and we know that everyone has their own opinion, but this one interested us because it's specifically from a man's perspective so we wondered how it might differ from the other lists we've seen:
It's a short list of only six items, and the wipes warmer is on there as usual. The other items do seem a little more male-oriented. These items are also deemed unnecessary:
• A Diaper Bag: Sure, it doesn't have to be marketed as a "diaper bag" but you will need something that can be cleaned
• Peepee Teepees: Does anyone actually buy those?

Shaw's Original Fir...
I absolutely agree about the diaper bag. A normal backpack is the perfect solution. Wash-able, and hands free.
I couldn't agree more about those foolish diaper genies. They're awful!! So wasteful, too... and I used a diaper bag for the first couple of months, then stashed it in favor of my old favorite purse. I just tucked in a diaper and small pack of wipes, and anything else I thought I might need. Only for overnight trips or maybe a gone-all-day adventure did we use the diaper bag.
We got a package of Peepee Teepees as a gift. The point was to read the directions on the package. They are still unopened (what is the point) waiting to be given to the next friend to have a boy.
I love my Fleurville bag and don't know what I'd do without it. It's easy to clean, doesn't fall over when I sit it down and has room for everything. It's also cute enough to double as my purse.
I also bought my daughter shoes this winter because socks just wouldn't stay on without them and it was way too cold some days to just take her out in socks.
The rest I completely agree with. Our wipe warmer ended up in the basement storage after a few weeks.
I could do without our diaper bag, but I love it - it's a black skip hop duo deluxe w/paci pocket.
could NOT do without our Arm & Hammer version of the diaper genie. it really does keep the odors in, and it also keeps the pets out!
I agree with the rest, esp. the wipes warmer. we've never had one so our daughter doesn't know any better.
I get so annoyed at the wipe warmer bashing! We used cloth wipes, and the thing was genius! My husband loved it -- our kids had the cleanest, most rash-free tushes anywhere.
MY husband rates it as the MOST useful item we got.
People who knock it use disposable wipes, and so don't have a clue at how useful it is.
One person's opinion. I heard similar pro/cons about all the items on the list as well as a baby bathtub, sling, swing/bouncy seat, etc., etc. We didn't get a wipes warmer or a diaper genie (got a diaper champ as a gift but was just going to use a trash can with a lid). Got the peepee teepees (even gave some as a gift) but never used them--the friend who gave them to us said it was more because she thought they were funny than useful (same reason I gave them). In the end, what works for you and your kid is what works. I personally like my diaper bag, my kid's shoes (discovered his feet and the socks started coming off immediately), his bathtub, Moby wrap, and many other things. There are a few things I wouldn't feel the need to repeat if/when we have #2 including several things friends said we *had* to have.
when you use pre-moistened disposable wipes there really is no need for a wipe warmer. the place where it comes in handy is when you use cloth diapers and cloth wipes that would otherwise be dry. i specifically bought a wipe warmer to keep my cloth wipes moist with a simple solution i made :)
We used cloth wipes and never had any desire for a wipes warmer. Someone bought me one and I returned it. We just used cut up flannel and a squirt bottle with water in it. Even in the middle of a cold winter I never thought my daughter needed a warm wipe, and she didn't care either since she just thought it was normal.
I'm going on kid #3 and I agree with all of these!
The only thing we bought that was on that list was a diaper bag (and we got it after he was born...I was using a regular messanger bag before). I used it up until my son was about one but we could have lived without it. Great list!....and yeah...what's with the Peepee Teepees? Weird!
Agreed that the Peepee Teepees are mostly a novelty, but as for the wipes warmer... it's sort of a courteous thing to take the edge off of those wipes (I just warm them in my hands now, can't find the darn warmer from baby #1). Don't agree? The next time you're changing a diaper at 2am, grab a wipe and give YOUR bits a swipe - yikes, chilly! ;o)
cloth diapering, cloth wiping mama here. didn't have a wipe warmer and never--nope, not once--wished we had. my kid's had one happy bum the whole time, too, and basically never minded much about a diaper change.
as for diaper bags, we used one the first few weeks. it definitely made us feel safer going out with our baby's entire world tugged along with us, but once the shock of new-parentdom subsided, so did our use of the diaper bag.
sigh..these list are always so subjective. I think you have to go with what works for you and your baby. I followed one of these lists before I gave birth and the wipe warmer was also on the things you don't need list, so I did not buy or register for one.
What was the first thing I had to run out and get after the baby? A baby wipe warmer, because my son would scream bloody murder every time I had to change him. After I bought my wipe warmer no more tears and everyone was happy. I'm still using it after three years and I use the disposable wipes with it (the trick is to add about a half a cup of water into the warmer every time you add new wipes and the wipes stay nice and moist). So, maybe the trick is to just get the basic things for your baby up front and then after the baby comes then go and get what you need based on your child's preferences. Also, my diaper genie is still in use and I think it was one of the best gifts I recieved.
We use cloth wipes and I think the wipes warmer is silly too. And I think fancy wipes solutions are too. =) We change diapers in the bathroom and just wet wipes with water from the sink. But seriously, if a warmer encourages you to cloth diaper, go with it!
Re: wipes warmers for cloth wipes. I agree with no need for this, in theory. But our faucet takes so long to warm up to even luke warm water that we've found the warmer indispensable. As our kids get older, they use the warm wipes to wash sticky hands and faces. Necessary? Maybe not. But I'd buy one again!
Ha, I have to admit I succumbed to the Peepee Teepees. Definitely a waste. But in the other hand, my mom loved them and used them every time she went to change our son. So, as with everything when it comes to babies, it depends on person/baby/lifestyle, etc.
I tried using the Peepee Teepees on my son. He peed them off. When I recovered from my hysterical laughing fit, I threw them out.
