Babies love to be close to the heart, smell familiar smells, and feel the motion of being walked around. All of these make dads perfect candidates for babywearing! Check out a few favorite dad-friendly baby carriers - from slings to soft structured packs - after the jump:
- Rockin' Baby slings come in all kinds of playful prints that make a statement for dads and moms.
- Bobas come in lots of solid, neutral organic fabrics. That's actually the husband of Boba's designer pictured up top!
- AngelPack carriers are made of beautiful, printed organic fabrics. But they're all reversible to a solid backside so dads can carry without wearing a floral print, for instance.
- Moby Wrap is currently featuring dads on their site. Head over there to see more inspiration.
- The Beco Gemini has a sleek structured look that dads just might like. Plus, it comes in brown and black.

I love them! I bought my sling grey so we could both use it... but if we'll have an other baby I'll buy one specially for Dad!
My husband is a big guy. Does anyone have a recommendation for a baby carrier that would fit a bigger guy? Our first daughter HATED being worn, so the fact that the carriers we borrowed never really fit right didn't matter but we are hoping #2 takes to it better.
We use the Ergo carrier and it's FANTASTIC!!!! It works great for me or my wife and my daughter LOVES it!!!
We have a Beco Butterfly that my husband and I both use.
Does anyone else feel uneasy about the positioning of that baby in the sling?
We also bought an Ergo in grey, and my husband and I both love it - so does the baby! I stitched a skull on it to make it even better.
@thenewsmiths - I had the same reaction! It looks like the baby would be chin to chest, and the dad doesn't have a clear sight line of its face. But it sure looks cool, doesn't it?
@nellymom, my husband is a big guy and he likes using a mei tai carrier, they are one size fits all so we can both use it even though I'm on the petite side. It's impossible for it to not fit because you j
ust tie it on. I like the Babyhawk brand for their cute patterned fabrics but there are lots of brands of them out there.
We've been very happy with our Boba, which we use for our three year old. It's much easier than a wagon or a stroller on a city street! The neutral colors, sturdy construction, and ability to carry a child up to 4 years/45 pounds sold us on it. We're looking forward to using it with our next child, as well.
MammasMilk has adjustable slings that adjust with velcro. They do not have a ring and excess fabric like other adjustable slings. I bought a plain khaki one that my hubby used frequently.
Yeah, that first baby is being carried in a no-no position. Those carriers are bad news and totally unsafe for babies.
For big guys I always recommend less structured carriers: ring slings, mei tais and wraps.
We have a Boba and we love it. My husband is a largish guy and it fantastic for our baby. we use it on hikes, city outings, and dog walks. My baby is just starting to walk so its really easy to slide him into the carrier when he gets tired - much less hassle than a stroller. The only two problems are drool running down my back, and having to carrying his diaper bag in my hands instead of just shoving it on the pram. oh well! can't have everything!
First picture = hugely unsafe babywearing no-no! Really. I know he looks hip, but those carriers are very similar to the recalled pouch-style and should not be featured in any responsible babywearing article.
If you can't see the baby's face, it's not safe.
But thank you for featuring babywearing at all! Real men definitely wear their babies.
I don't think my daughter EVER cried while in a carrier, and I used four different kinds:
Standard "Snugli"
Hip carrier/sling
Structured back carrier
Mei tai (sp?)
I carried her until she was over 20 pounds. Not because I'm any kind of saint, but because it kept her quiet!
We have a Moby, which can be worn by people of varying sizes, but my husband only wore the baby once. He said everyone was giving him weird looks and that he will just use his arms from now on. Haha. Sensitive.
I still use it.
AT: You've pictured a very unsafe sling in the first position. Please highlight as a no-no according to both babywearing experts and the CPSC. Several infants have died being similiarly postioned.
My husband always like either the Bjorn or the Ergo. I only like the Ergo. I've never figured out how to be comfortable and safe in another sling.
The only baby carrier my husband and I can share is the Scootababy. It's a hip carrier with adjustment points at the waist and at the shoulder. He's almost a foot taller than me and when he uses my Beco every single buckle gets fubared. He also loved the Mobywrap with our winter baby, but no so much with our summer baby.
My hubby and I each have our own SSC -- soft structured carrier, like the Ergo, called an 'Olives & Applesauce' which we absolutely adore. He takes Jack (30lbs, 23 months) to daycare every day and back in it -- so comfy and so darn awesome. Baby-wearing daddies are the sexiest :)
Also have an Ergo, the brown organic one. My husband has gotten as much use out of it as me!
Adding another vote for the (not listed) Ergo as great for both Mummy and Daddy to use.
Pity the man in the picture isn't wearing baby safely!!!!!! :(
Yay for a post about babywearing. Double-yay for a post about babywearing daddies. But, I gotta say, major fail for showing such a poor example of SAFE babywearing. Baby should always be visible and kissable, never in the cradle carry unless actively nursing (which, I'm guessing this baby isn't since the wearer is a dude). Please research and help promote safe babywearing. Visit babywearingschool.com for more info. I also have a list of safety tips here: http://www.carrymebabycarriers.com/safety.html
