Whereas it seems to be generally agreed upon that simple bookshelves that let the books stand out are preferred, apparently, book organization is quite the controversial topic. While taking other opinions into account can be a good thing, having fun with design and doing what you like is ultimately what matters. Getting back to the actual bookshelf, I recently came across this fine example of a backlit shelving unit that I would love to use as inspiration in my home office.
Replacing the back of a simple shelf with some semi-opaque plastic and wall mounted track lighting seems like a relatively simple project. Does anyone have experience doing this on their own?

This could also take the place of some of the bookcases I've seen as room dividers for various apartments and give more privacy without sacrificing the light.
I like this... but it's a little creepy, no? I agree with misterklein, but I'm not a modern style sort of girl and I can't think of where else this wouldn't seem... Dexterish. I've come around to considering organization by cover color, but you're gonna need a little more picture candy to sway me about this. And believe me, I'd like to see it.
You've got to be careful with the light source you use for lighting bookshelves. Halogen and incandescent sources emit UV, which deteriorates paper faster than you might think. Some warm white LED rope light running along the underside of the shelves is a better idea, IMHO.
