My fiance and I are planning an overhaul of our city backyard, and we immediately agreed we want the new patio to have a herringbone pattern.
While chevron is trendy, herringbone brick walkways and patios are timeless. The classic pattern lends a little order without being boring. It's as appropriate in an English country home (Image 1) as it is in a Brooklyn backyard (Image 2) or California patio (Image 4).

Shaw's Original Fir...
Absolutely. Do it up.
I'd paint the first one yellow. If i ever half a brick walkway it's going to be yellow.
We're building a patio this spring and summer and we picked herringbone for the timelessness factor, too. :)
I also have a city home and am doing a herringbone pattern patio out of reclaimed brick. Of course it requires the most cuts!
Love this collection of inspiring pictures and I also agree one cannot go wrong with herringbone. It's always a classic.
It's beautiful, but kind of formal. I think this looks best in urban settings, particularly if the house is brick (or has brick somewhere) too. Also if the garden is more formal. (I think it would look out of place, for instance, in my "natural woodland garden" or in the Japanese inspired portion of my yard.
I'm thinking this could be a budget-friendly option, too. I'm always seeing bricks offered for free on Craigslist.
Here's a good video from TOH about choosing a pattern: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/video/0,,1632381,00.html
Love the fact that it's "Difficulty: Easy – unless you're terribly indecisive"
That's me!
Have always wanted a herringbone path... Perhaps quartering a herb garden. Now I just need to move somewhere with a yard!
