When you own a design and build firm, your home office should reflect the creativity you bring to your projects. Stephen Schoup's new office for Building Lab Inc. does just that: it's made from shipping containers and other reused materials.

After out growing his backyard workshop, Stephen Schoup needed a larger space for his design firm Building Lab. Instead of moving or building a traditional structure, he settled on an L-shaped shipping container configuration, creating a charming courtyard in his yard.
The containers were placed on pier foundations, the exteriors insulated, and clad in cement board siding. Salvaged lumber from previous deconstructions were used to unite the structures, and painted to match the existing house. Inside, the floors are heating by rooftop solar, lit by energy efficient lighting and windows, and interior wall panels made from recycled newspaper.

It has been my dream for 3 years to build a shipping container home! Any other Austinites getting in on this movement? Anyone interested in a total novice helping them out? I'm really excited to learn!
This place is fantastic, we toured it a few years ago when it was on the Build It Green Home Tour. There is another container home in Richmond, CA just up the road and hopefully this year we will break ground on our hybrid Shipping Container/ICF home in the foothills of CA, fingers crossed.
