The thing I love about designing a home is that it can be like having a personal time machine or teleporter. Decor can mentally transport you to another time or place. Even better if that place is "vacation paradise" and it's right in your own backyard. These 5 backyard tiki bars prove you can capture the tropical oasis look without going over the top, with nary a rope light, inflatable palm tree or plastic lei to be seen.

First, feast your eyes on this lush tiki hut with some unexpected contemporary styling, from Galeazzo Design.

This lovely little two-seater bar is in the Southhampton home of designer Cecila Dupire, as featured in the latest issue of Rue magazine.

I love the juxtaposition of the modern dining set below this thatched hut in the Florida Keys, captured by Craig Jones Landscape Architecture.

This Australia home from Paul Clout Design is proof that some well-designed wicker will give you a tropical vibe.

Even though it doesn't totally "fit" in the Cleveland, Ohio landscape, I'm sure this tiki bar is a welcome respite in the summer, from The Ohio Valley Group on Houzz.

So... who's ready for a vacation?
