When I first laid eyes upon this cake stand table lamp, I thought it was gorgeous. So warm and playful! Then I learned that to change the light bulb, all you had to do was to remove the dome. So logical, so easy! But that was just the beginning. As it turns out, the true genius behind the Bake me a cake lamp
is in the unique collaboration responsible for its creation. Designed by Morten & Jonas
for Northern Lighting
, the lamps themselves are to be manufactured through a partnership with the Norwegian correctional services, and will be crafted by the inmates at a Bergen area prison in Norway. Using oak wood and smoked tinted glass, the goal is to create a high quality product within the prison walls, and to challenge the inmates' ways of thinking and acting by providing opportunities for meaningful activity and pride in craftsmanship.
The clincher? The name of the lamp comes from the classic cartoon story where a mother bakes a file into a cake for her imprisoned son to help him escape. Love it!
