Because of my busy job — and my intrinsic laziness once I leave the office — I don't cook often. When I do cook, I try to make the experience as pleasurable as possible. But one of the things that gets me each time, is playing spice "roulette." You know the game — trying to figure out what mysterious spice is occupying a particular shaker. Never knowing for sure if it is paprika, salt, or pepper inside your opaque containers.
Although the Balloon Shakers designed by Masayuki Kurokawa will not solve my biggest woes (when trying to differentiate between paprika, ground red pepper, or chili pepper you're on your own!) they will at least allow you to see the beautiful spices contained within the shaker.
These shakers are simply beautiful. The bulb-like container allows you to prominently display your beautifully hued spices — you will undoubtedly leave these shakers on your kitchen counter, not hidden in your cupboards.
Of course, beauty doesn't always come cheap: a set of two will set you back $68 at Merchant no. 4.

Sprout Side Table
wow. i've always hated the matchy spice rack thing but this is changing my mind.
I wonder if there's a cheaper DIY version someone could come up with...The shapes resemble small bud vases that are available quite easily and cheaply. You would just need to figure out a suitable stopper of some kind.
mangono, you can buy cork stoppers at craft stores and online in all sizes.
I don't think they would be practical. I see them tipping over and rolling off of the table if you didn't set them down just right.
I kind of agree with them being impractical, I think you could DIY a very good looking if not almost identicle version and they would be beautiful for displaying spices you don't use as often on a small shelf or rack in the kitchen. As someone who cooks every day I could see myself getting really annoyed, really quickly, trying to figure out what is what by smell or taste test.
My solution was to use a set of clear test tubes and rack from a scientific supply house. Plenty of room for all my different spices, and I can see them all. Labels printed on clear stickers help me if I can't remember which spice is which. The added advantage is that I can even store my liquid flavorings in them [vanilla, almond extract, etc.]. Some days, you just *feel* like a mad scientist, you know? <g>
#1 I for see mad clean up with those light bulb filled spice containers up top. I HATE sweeping up glass.
#2 I think Oriontradr is a genius, that is an awesome way to store your spices and would probably take up less space and be easier to store in the test tube holder.
I see a shopping trip after work in my future.
Very beautiful but I know exactly what would happen: 1. you have something on your fingers that gunks the thing up immediately, 2. you pull out the stopper that is covered in a fine dust of something colorful and it goes everywhere, 3. you can't set the thing down while it is uncorked because it will roll around. Trouble in the making.
I think they are beautiful. I love them.
I don't think they will be any more trouble than any other spice container.
Spice dust happens.
I love that idea, oriontradr! I wonder if I could get larger test tubes that would hold the typical quantity you buy at the store.
Personally, I have never stored my spices in unlabled opaque containers. You could maybe do something like this with your opaque containers.
I think the ones posted above, though pretty, would be irritating to deal with both because they are unlabled and because they seem like they would spill easily.
Cute, but with my fumbling hands they would not last very long!
Oriontradr, so neat!! What a fantastic idea.
Gaidig, I love the website you linked, it has now created a mad desire within me to start playing with decals.
I thought spices weren't supposed to be exposed to light.
There was a post about using test tubes to store spices a while ago (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/diy-test-tube-spices-107835), and I believe there was a home tour in which they were displayed in a rack (although I can't remember which tour). Anyway, those might be good reference points for those of you who like the idea.
Yeah, these ones are just begging to get broken.
these are gorgeous.. you need to have enough counter space to set them out.. can't hide these away in a cabinet for sure..
Tupperware has labels to avoid your alleged dilemma.
That aside, the containers are cool
those are beautiful, but they aint cheap. for similar, you can always head over to sciplus.com where they got tons of glass bottles/test tubes/canisters,etc and corks and caps to go with them. everything there is science overstock so its really affordable.
I never have that problem.
