Our friend, Charlie Suisman, over at MUG just asked if we'd give a boost to a petition they've started that seeks to ban plastic bag use in the city. Why? Plastic grocery bags are useful for minutes and harmful for centuries, AND there are other solutions. We totally support this type of thing. Check out the petition they've started as well as the links to good resources on the subject. Ban The Bag at Change.org, Created by MUG

wow--whatever happened to freedom of choice?
I'm all for freedom of choice so long as we are not damaging our environment. Plastic bags are entirely unnecessary and easily replaceable, and they do damage our environment.
Living in an area that has many areas prone to flooding, it always stuns me when I see the tree tops littered with so many plastic shopping bags even long after the flood waters have receded. I try to recycle these bags when I'm stuck with them, but there are still many more than I can use. I miss paper bags. And it seems that I never have enough of the reusable tote bags.
Yes. I agree. Ban the stinkin' plastic bags.
Toronto has officially approved the ban on plastic bags. As of January 1, 2013 no stores will be permitted to provide plastic bags to customers.
Plastic bags are great garbage can liners. They are great for stinky diapers when I am out and about and want to hide the smell and mess. They are great for sandy wet clothes from the beach. They are great garbage bags for cars and long trips. Trust me, in my house, I re-use them all. Governments should stay out of environmental issues. I can't imagine living in a place where I leave out the door as fast as I can to grab groceries to find out at the store there is no way to haul home all the food I just bought because I forgot my eco fabric grocery bag. I love those shopping bags by the way- but I rarely use them for grocery shopping. I have a big family, I would have to store 20 bags in the back of my car. People should be more responsible and leave government out of it. I recycle like crazy. I love recycling because it is my choice and I love to take care of the environment as much as I can- I think people should be as resourceful as they can. But I do believe in free markets, personal responsibility and companies doing what the consumers want and not what the government and few environmentalist want- WE WANT PLASTIC grocery bags.
