Here's yet another great city program promoting greener living: the city of Los Angeles City is offering residents an opportunity to purchase some subsidized discounted compost bins for the backyard, with free workshop courses explaining how to convert your kitchen scraps and garden trimmings into rich dark manna for the garden* instead of ending up in non-decomposing dump sites.
The two models being offered at notable discounted prices are the Earth Machine ($20), a non-turning model that holds up to 80 gallons, and the Bio-Stack ($45; normally $100), a three tier design that converts natural waste into compost in 12-16 weeks. For more information call (213)485-2260. Saturday, September 23, 2006, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.(Noon), at the Griffith Park Composting Education Facility. (*Offer for City of Los Angeles residents with valid ID only. Bring driver's license and Dept. of Water & Power Bill)
