091409-fire.jpgThe Station fire here in LA destroyed dozens of homes and threatened many more. It's something many of us, especially those of us who live in the hills, worry about. But, what if there was a product that you could spray on your home to make it fire-retardant? Sounds crazy but there is such a product. The inspiration for its creation? Disposable diapers...

John Bartlett, a former firefighter, was inspired to create Barricade fire proofing gel when he noticed that the only item to survive a blaze was a wet baby diaper. The super-absorbent polymer technology that keeps a baby's bottom dry is the same technology that is at work in the gel. Mixed with water, the super absorbent polymers in the gel concentrate trap the water molecules, suspending them in tiny bubbles and acting as a barrier against fire. Although it's been available commercially for a few years, it's only now become available to homeowners. To read more about it, click here.
