Q: We bought a house that needed a lot of work, and so far we've completely renovated all of it except the two bathrooms. The problem I'm having is trying to decide which color to make them. The living room, kitchen and hallway are Pavilion Beige by Sherwin Williams (all paint is SW), the dining room Rustic Red (shown above), the master bedroom Tavern Taupe, the second bedroom is Willow Tree (a mint grey green) and the office is Black Fox (a very dark brown).
The house is very earth toned, so something like blue wouldn't feel right to me. Neither of us are a far of yellow either. The one bathroom seems like a green would work well, but we're both at a loss for what color would work in the other.
Both bathrooms will have wainscoting, so while all white isn't out, having a pop of color to make the wainscoting stand out would be preferred.

A medium grey-brown would look lovely with white wainscoting. It would also complement the colors you chose for the rest of your home.
That was my original thought, but I was concerned that since the bedroom and office are already brown, and the living room, kitchen and hallway are beige, that it would be brown overload. But maybe not.
I've heard that green in a bathroom can be bad... the light reflects a greenish tint on to your skin, making you look sickly in the mirror.
I would repeat one of the beige or taupe colors you've used in other areas of your home.
It is important to balance your home, so you may want to reconsider blue (maybe with a hint of purple for warmth). Also, with all the colors in the rest of the house, it may be a good to leave the bathrooms very neutral - again about balance and not over saturating your house in color. Pale grey would seem to fit your requirements.
Depending on the light in the room and how much use they get, a neutral wall color flatters and makes it easier to get ready.
How about a plum to compliment the warm tones in both the rustic red and the greige tone of the kitchen?
I would be happy to show you pictures if you would like, but we actually did a grayish-blue metallic paint by Ralph Lauren in our bathroom. Mixed with the earthtone tiles and neutral towels, etc., it turned out to blend well next to our earth-toned guest room.
kball, pics would be great!
What about a deep marigold color? Its not yellow (more orange, actually) and is a warm, rich color that has a lot of "pop" even in small doses.

Do you put your makeup on in the bathroom or do your grooming? Pick a color that flatters your skin tone, not the tile.
An earthy, spicey pumpkin colour would work well with your palette and your white wooodwork would look fantastic. Otherwise, I second mcintyree on marigold. We have Benjamin Moore Cork in our bedroom and it looks fantastic. It's a very warm, deep colour somewhere between orange, yellow and green.
I'd repeat a color - such as that red - but do an interesting finish such as a vertical stripe in a flat/semigloss finish within the same color.
I know this isn't as helpful but, I *love* that picture! It is my style exactly. :D
navy blue! Rich looking and will go with the ralph lauren-esque colors already in your home
You mentioned this, but for a bathroom I love all-white. I know you want to highlight the wainscoting, but you already have it standing out all over your house with all the different paint colors. The wainscoting can add texture to the room, rather than contrast a color. I think an all-white bathroom with some color accents with plants or towels, could really tie it in to the colors in the other rooms. Plus everyone looks great in gleaming reflected white! Refreshing :) If you must do a color, maybe something soft - a very pale, velvety taupe?
I agree with white for the bathrooms.....maybe with a tiny bit of grey in the towels and accessories. I like the marigold color suggestion, too, but maybe in small doses again in the accessories.
Go for textures in the bathroom.
You seem to have a wonderfully colorful home, and I think having the bathrooms more subdued with whites will actually enhance the colorfulness of the rest of your home.
BEAUTIFUL shade of red, btw.
You know, bathrooms have doors which are usually closed, so it's not like you have visual flow issues, like you do with your kitchen and living room... You CAN use whatever color you like.
Our lav is the same color as the living room and dining room near it. Our master bath suite is blue, which doesn't match my pale aqua room nor my partner's cafe au lait room. I don't think it matters -- pick a color you like.
As for green, we had a moss green bathroom in our previous house and I liked it just fine. I think a cool, light beach glass color would be even better, especially with white trim.
Another vote for white in the bathroom. I have tried celadon, which was just awful. I have tried rose, which is great for the skin, but pretty intense unless the bath is HUGE. I now have white, and just love it. I can completely change the look of the bath with just new accessories.
I agree, no green. My first thoughts were that of grey, with clean white trim and bright accents in a color of your choice (red, yellow, fuschia, teal.)
Yes, it would be helpful to have photos of your bathrooms.
Love the choice of colors.
I suggest SW Harmonic with white wainscotting for bathroom. Even Harmonic Tan though I think the 1st one would give the palette a lift.
This photo is uncannily like a kitchen/dining room remodel that I'm possibly embarking on (especially the opened up doorway/breakfast bar). Would you be willing to share any other photos of the space? Thanks!
I love the look of using several whites and near-whites. White woodwork & wainscoting, creamy white walls, off-white shower curtain, and artwork with lots of grays and whites.
Or use a black and white toile or damask print if you don't want it to be monochrome.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I have a lot to think about now :) Kate, is there anyway I can send you more pictures?
What do people think of this?:

Hi Anthony, I really like the grays and whites in the photo you posted -- but I would work in a color to add some oomph. Maybe a lemony yellow? If you'd be willing to share, I'd love to see more pictures. You could send them to: heckmann (at) usc (dot) edu
Thank you!
