Judging from the reaction to last year's Make a Big Splash: Clear Glass Tub post (it was the most popular post on Apartment Therapy in 2011), I think that a few of you might find this interesting. Check out this stunning, custom-made indoor glass swimming pool designed by Paxton Locher Architects.

Who says you can't swim when it's foggy in San Francisco? (Or blustery in Winnipeg for that matter.) Who says you have to follow the rules and build an indoor pool the traditional way? Not this pool. It fears neither fog nor frore and sits proudly in the middle of this contemporary home in Hampstead Village, London, UK.
I wish I could just bob my head, blink my eyes, and instantly have one of these I-Dream-of-Jeannie style. Until then, I'll just have to imagine that I am in the living room playing Sharks and Minnows with the kids.

It's beautiful but I am so confused looking at it. It's like an ADD dream or nightmare... (what to do now, where to go now... everything at once!)
The only thing I can think of is that if that glass ever cracked, those books and the piano would be goners...
My own inside pool has been a dream since long, and considering the cost (apart from building it!!!) of alone heating the thing, this seems a good idea. BUT: having that in your living room takes away all the cosy feeling at least I'd want i my living room and how often would I have to clean it so that it looks as nice and shiny as int here pics and not like dirty mucky pond water?? And what if it ever only starts leaking - and i'd be fiercely looking for cracks all the time!
No, I'll give it a pass. but if friends had it, I'd love to visit them or do the housesitting ;-)
Beautiful, but I bet the upkeep is scary. Must be great for skinny dipping.
what about the chlorine smell
You know, I'm not sure this would be horrible. Make sure the glass is double-paned, or has a space b/t the pool and the viewing glass, and it should stop leaks of water AND chlorine-y smells.
I thought the same thing, Trish1980. They're in earthquake central so that's a real possibility.
@schang: I'd imagine they use saltwater purification: it tends to work better than chlorine and is gentler on skin and hair.
As far as leaks, if they are using 2" acrylic, I wouldn't worry too much. 1" is professional aquarium (think zoo glass) standard, and at 1" it's bulletproof. The extra inch for me is because the glass runs the entire length of the pool and not just a window.
This is definitely a cool concept, I just wish I could justify (or have it be possible) one in my own home.
@schang. It looks like it is closed off so the chlorine is hopefully isolated. I'm more concerned about the tv falling off the wall and electrocuting a pool full of guests.
Interesting concept, but why is the girl from The Ring in their pool? Yikes.
I don't think I'd be doing flip turns in there!
the idea of keeping it clean stresses me out, but the comment by @repressd had me laughing out loud.
but I meant to add, still pretty cool. ;}
Anyone ever seen the movie "The New Age"? If you have, you'll know what I'm referencing. I rank this the same way I rank the clear bathtub; very cool, but nothing I would want.
Wow.
The Paxton Mews house was featured in the BBC Four series "Living With the Future". It's pretty amazing house even beyond the pool.
It would also make a great koi pond.
Oooh. It looks beautiful, especialy the "colour" of the water. However, if I lived there, I'd have to clean it all the time (well, if you lived there, you'd probably have maids!) and check it all the time for leaks and what not.
Yes, the cleaning! Water & Glass is a recipe for disaster-- ieks!
Looks cool, but I'm sure it's loud and echoey in that glass room. I wouldn't like that.
@BigTab - I don't think London gets very many earthquakes. Although if it were in an earthquake zone I would have the same concern.
yes it's just perfect for all the millionaires who read apartment therapy.
