As I've mentioned before, I currently don't own a dust pan or brush simply because I haven't wanted to buy a cheap plastic one. But there have been multiple occasions recently (when my dehydrator fell over and smashed my buckwheat cereal into little smithereens all over the floor, for example) when a dust ban and broom/brush would have been very handy. Here are a few beautiful and durable non-plastic versions that I wouldn't mind spending money on:These are definitely more expensive than your run-of-the-mill plastic variety, but in my mind, you pay for quality and durability. With proper care, these will all last for a lifetime:
1 Dustpan and Broom by Ole Jensen, 23.70 EUR from Finnish Design Shop: winner of the Formland Prize in 2003, the brush is made of specially-produced wood and Chinese pig bristles, with the long hairs bent around a rod and glued to a wedge in the wooden handle (an old technique that produces an extremely durable brush). Dustpan is made of flat, malleable polypropylene. Blue color is also available fro $24.95 from Green Depot.
2 Dust Pan and Brush, $26 and $32 respectively from Brook Farm General Store: the brush is handcrafted in Sweden with an oil-treated beechwood handle and natural horse hair bristles. The dust pan is made in the USA of powder-coated steel.
3 Swedish Table Brush Set, $38 from Mjolk: Iris Hantverk makes beautiful home cleaning tools using traditional Swedish craftsmanship techniques. The handle in this set is made of oak, while the brush bristles are made of horsehair. Oil as needed with mineral oil, and the brush will age beautifully.
4 Harimi Dustpan by Oji Masanori
, $50 from Mjolk: this dust pan is made with paper colored by Japanese persimmon, which coats the pan with a sealant that is waterproof, protects against insects and prevents deterioration.
5 Natural Wood Brush, $25 from General Store: Made with wood and natural fibers.
6 Plastic Free Stainless Steel Dust Pan, $24.95 from Life Without Plastic: stainless steel, rust-free dust pan is completely plastic-free, and has an oiled sustainably harvested beechwood handle. Made in Germany.
7 Plastic-Free Wooden and Natural Hand Brush, $24.95 from Life Without Plastic: made of sterilized horsehair on an oiled sustainably harvested beechwood grip body. Also made in Germany.
