The man pictured above, sitting comfortably in his odd yet, homey living room is Charlie Hull. He, along with many others in the US have fully functional and prepared bomb shelters—wait what? That's right, bomb shelters. It sounds like a Blast from the Past, but we stumbled upon some beautiful photos of these "always be prepared" spaces....
Good Magazine shares with us the work of Richard Ross who has made photographing these emergency and disaster relief structures a passion. His work is exceptional and makes such a small and cold space feel bold and often times, beautiful.

I like Richard Ross he is a great photographer and always thought provoking. I recommend his book- "Architecture of Authority" there are some very unsettling pictures like Guantanamo Bay prison.

I would prefer a wine cellar over a bomb shelter if the world was coming to an end, going out with a 1995 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (only one I can think of right now) would be the way.
Curious about the pagoda style dwelling. Am I missing something; is this the bomb shelter's entrance? What's up with that gravel pile with the (seemingly) randomly strewn tire?
I'm not the type who gets claustrophic easily, but that dining room makes me very uncomfortable. Feels like a bug glue trap or something. Overall, living underground sounds cool. I've seen larger spaces in those bomb shelters that are very inviting.
that's awesome! my grandfather had a bomb shelter on his property during the cold war era. my uncle now owns the property and my dad thoughtfully made sure it was still stocked with canned goods before the dreadful Y2K disaster. good thing nothing happened...i woulda been stuck eating 30 year old canned pears.

For a claustrophobic person this is an absolutely terrifying post. I would rather sweat it out with the above-ground populace.
It's funny the way those chairs are all pointed in the same direction. I assume they face a monitor connected to a camera which sends down images from the surface of the zombie apocalypse so he'll know when it's safe to venture from the shelter in search of survivors and supplies.
I would absolutely fucking love a bomb shelter though.
