Bar carts are making a huge comeback and we're 100% on board with that. Entertaining doesn't always involve booze; but typically when we do break out the bottles, bar carts make it a little easier.
Bar carts create the perfect little vignette that can spice up the look and feel in just about any room used for entertaining. Paint the cart any color you'd like — there's no wrong or right and if you are thinking about a metallic, these days gold seems to be a popular choice.
Bar carts are the perfect excuse to display a beautiful set of barware and the (sometimes!) exquisitely designed bottles provided by the spirits industry. The different bottles will eventually be used but they will add to your room's decor int the mean time.

Shaw's Original Fir...
If you're the sort who likes to repurpose/craft your furnishings, here's a thought:
(I'm working on this project right now.)
Take 1 old dresser drawer, 4 old railing spindles, then (preferably) some found wood to brace the 4 legs. Screw the spindles into the underside of the drawer, screw the bracing wood into the spindles, paint the whole thing whatever color you fancy (or leave as-found) and stock the drawer with booze and glasses.
I'm considering making the legs foldable using brackets available at the hardware store, so I can tuck the bar drawer away when not entertaining.
If anyone has thoughts on improving this project, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!

I like #4... nice to see you can get the cool grown-up look without having dozens of expensive bottles of liquor...
I am desperate to find an affordable Art Deco bar cart -- i want over-the-top hollywood glam! Any leads?
The only thing that sucks about having a bar cart is dust. I'm too lazy to dust the glasses and bottles o' booze.
@ElaneB, what if you found some beautiful piece of fabric (sheer and gauzy or maybe vintage tea towel) to drape just over the bottles?
Also, update to my earlier post, I've sketched out what I'm working up for my own butler tray to use as a party bar: http://www.kitschykitten.com/2011/11/07/upcycling-an-old-dresser-drawer/
I'd love some ideas on attaching the legs if anyone has any.

Woo-hoo! Look at all that booze! I love #3. It's industrial chic!
Gah! If only I didn't have small children... Too much glass!
My mother has a glass & steel 80's version (we call it a trolley in the UK). She brings it out every Xmas!
One problem, its storage space hungry as it doesn't fold away but I know if we get rid of we'll regret that as it's truly retro.
