A lot of material goes into a standing wool rug, which is made of strips of wool (or felt or fleece) rolled up or lined up and attached together so that the edges of the material make up the face of the rug. The result is a thick, exquisitely-textured rug that screams handmade:

Like the more common rag rug, the beauty of this is that you can make a standing wool rug (also called a beaded wool rug) yourself from scraps of wool (save your old sweaters!). See a good how-to with pictures at Ali Strebel Designs.
