Bed pockets, those fabric slings that hang from the side or the end of the bed, can come in handy if you don't have the space for a bedside table.
We've posted them on Apartment Therapy before and many commenters didn't like their messy look. Still, we feel that in certain contexts (and as long as you don't overload them with stuff) they work well.
We particularly like the DIY versions we've seen, which are easy to customize to the look of your bed. If you made one from high-quality felt or linen, it could be really striking.

Shaw's Original Fir...
For the most part this looks pretty tacky. The only place I even slightly understood it was at the end of the baby bed - but it would have to be removed after the baby could stand up in the bed.
Hey Jeri,
Having trouble with the link. Can you fix?
It might not be the cleanest look for a bed in the middle of a room, but for a small space (like mine) where my side is juuust far enough away from the wall so I can get out, but not far enough away to fit an end table, it's an ideal solution for glasses and cell phone. If you don't like the look you could probably cover it up during the daytime with your comforter when you make the bed.
That last example looks like half a pillow sham...which would be a good idea. Just tuck one half under your mattress, and stick your books, remotes, etc. in the other half which would hang down.
Gonna make one for my daughter's dorm room
i agree, this is a great idea for bedrooms that don't have space for an end table. i have sconces up for lighting, and i like to keep my alarm clock far away enough, such that i need to climb out of bed to turn it off. the pockets provide a space to tuck my glasses/cell phone/journal away.
