Who doesn't love the idea of a big, comfy chair nestled in the corner of the bedroom? A cozy place to lounge after a long day or curl up under a warm blanket with a book and a pot of tea.
More often than not, my bedroom chair ends up looking like this — a repository for clothes and other random items that make their way into my supposed sanctuary.

I know I'm not alone. There's even a Facebook group for people like me with nearly 7,000 self-professed pilers who admit to moving a stack of clothes from the bed to the chair when they go to sleep and wake up. Sometimes the pile does make it into the closet, but it's usually a temporary move in preparation for a party or a seasonal deep-clean. Most days, I just rummage through it, hopelessly trying to decipher clean from dirty.
So what's the verdict on chairs in the bedroom? Is yours a corner of serenity or a constant source of visual clutter?

Shaw's Original Fir...
Unquestionably a clutter magnet BUT growing up I often sat in the one in my parent's bedroom.
I am the master of the clean laundry transfer. I can go for days just switching the laundry that needs to be hung in the closet back and forth from the bed to the chair. Every day I promise myself I will hang everything up before I go to bed, and every day I just move the pile to the chair.
However I LOVE the chair in the bedroom. So cozy. Maybe the real addition to my room should be some self-discipline?

Haha I've been wanting to find a nice lounge chair for my bedroom solely to put things on it.
The thing is, it would actually help keep more organized. When I don't have time to properly put something away, I make a neat pile of the items that is out of my way until I can deal with them. No chair to make a pile on = stuff everywhere.
I don't have a chair in the bedroom but I do have an ottoman...
...an yes, it can occassionally attract a small pile of items such as a bathrobe and the sweats I change into after work that don't belong in closets or drawers.
Mine is a clutter magnet. I can't think of the last time I actually sat in it.
I just got rid of my chair for this very reason. Without it I'm much more likely to just put the clothes away and be done with it.
My easy fix: dirty laundry hamper and a clean laundry hamper. No time to hang up everything I just tried on for girls night out? Throw it in the clean hamper and get it in the morning.
I put a coat rack in a corner of my bedroom, and it helps to catch those odd things like my purse, jacket, jeans, etc. that would otherwise get tossed on (in my case) the bench waiting for the next use. It's still clutter, but it feels better to me this way.
Maybe if i had room in my bedroom for a chair hahaha.
I have an armless chair and an ottoman by the window next to my bed...in hopes of lounging on weekends with a coffee or tea and a book.
So far...that has not happened, I'm afraid the pile of sewing projects would fall.
I did sit on the corner to put my shoes on recently though, so we have progress!
Oh definitely clutter magnet. I often fantasize about a ginormous walk in closet that has one never ending row of hooks. Or better: one hook right next to the bed that magically empties itself and is then ready for the next night.I think that'd be the only way that clothes wouldn't end up in a heap of some sort.
When I look at the lovely, serene sitting area in the first photo, it reminds me that I have to keep going on with own my purging project! Living in a small NYC apartment means that I cannot be sentimental - superfluous stuff takes up valuable real estate!
If there is stuff that I can't find a space for, it means that I don't need it and need to get rid of it. When I don't, I end up with the chair in photo 2! I have a laundry basket, a dry cleaning/repair triage bag or two, then things I can't decide if I need any more, or things I can't decide if I should hand wash or dry clean ... The oddball items end up on my lovely chair and my dogs think that the pile of stuff is delightful to sit on, which then means I have to go through the whole decision-making process again because the chair items are no longer clean!
I think I need to post photo #1 for inspiration!
Two small armchairs, both usually covered in semi-clean clothes. I think I would empty them more if I saw any purpose to bedroom chairs - if I want to lounge in the bedroom, I just get in bed. The BF likes to sit in them to put his shoes on, but I seem to end up on the floor even if the chairs are empty...
We too, have 2 chairs in our bedroom. The only reason we have them there is because they were inherited from the now dead grandparents. They totally don't match the rest of the room, they make it more crowded, and they are major clutter magnets. I have no reason to sit in them - too small for sitting comfortably and reading in. What else would I do there?
BUT over Christmas we de cluttered and the chairs are laundry free. I now use the one on my side to pile my "outfit" on for the next day. 3 days in a row so far, LOL. Maybe this is a new trend for me!
better than throwning stuff on the floor I guess
the one in my guest room is always abused in this way, but there's really no where else for guests to put things
I recently bought a fabulous Baker swivel rocker for our bedroom. My husband thought it was a waste of $ since we already had an armchair (a cast-off from his mother). But, the original armchair wasn't comfortable and so it became a clothes repository. Now with the new fab chair -- we actually use it -- both of us! And because we do, the clothes miraculously get put away.
Unfortunately, it would be a clutter collector in my house. There is something about having a space off of the floor that isn't the bed which just attracts clothing and becomes a dumping ground. I only wish the first photo were a constant reality for us!
I have a chair and ottoman in the reading nook of my room and it stays completley clean. When I was little kid I would leave everything out all the time and I don't think there was an inch of open, clean flooring in my bedroom. As I have grown up I have learned that what works for me is to put things away immediatley. IF I don't then I will look at that thing/item/pice of clothing sitting there and wont pick it up yet it will bother me for weeks until I force myself to pick it up.
While I don't sit it in that often, I have a beautiful chair in my bedroom. It is nice to have a place to drape clothes that will be re-worn.
i have an armless chair and desk in the corner. they both collect clothes. the baby steps i've made are that i emptied out the trunk at the foot of the bed to catch the jeans/hoodies that get worn after work and aren't really dirty....and a nice wicker laundry basket now sits on the desk to at least hold the clean clothes i haven't put away in an attractive way. the chair's staying clear . . . i sometimes sit on it to change my shoes. go me.
I LOVE the clean/dirty hamper suggestion. I think I'm going to have to do that.
If I had room, I would really like to have a small straight-back chair to sit on while getting dressed. Where do you chairless folks sit to put on your shoes?
Before the remodel, when the chair was just crammed in the bedroom because there was no other place for it, clothes were always piled on it. Post remodel, with new upholstery I actually like, and ample closet space, the chair is empty 99% of the time.
I keep most of my shoes by the front door and sit on the couch to put them on. The chair in the bedroom would have been a clutter magnet, but my dog took it over.
Timing is everything; my son just asked me this morning why the chair in my bedroom has always been the dogs bed and never functioned as a chair for people. Well at least I can't leave stuff on it.
I moved a chair from the living room to my bedroom to put up my Christmas tree, and I must admit, for the month or so the chair was in my bedroom, I had to make a concerted effort not to stack things (mostly clean clothes) on it. My boyfriend, on the other hand, automatically placed any discarded clothing on it. Now that the tree's down and the chair is in the living room, he's back to throwing his clothes on the floor!
This is precisely why I don't want to put a chair in my bedroom. I know I'll pile cloths on it.
Now that my bedroom has nothing but the bed to sit on (and I don't ever put dirty cloths on my bed), I'm forcing myself to be disciplined and put away cloths as I change.
I just know if we had a chair in our bedroom, which I would so love... we would turn it into a family dumping ground... No best go without it!!!
I have a comfy chair and ottoman in my bedroom and have developed the habit of keeping the room (and chair) clutter free because it helps me to sleep. Unfortunately, I don't often lounge in my cozy corner, but I love looking at it.
That's exactly what I do every night. Move clothes pile from bed to chair. It may end up in a laundry basket and shoved in the closet when expecting company.
yep, it would be a definate clutter magnet for us too!
though, maybe a bench at the foot of the bed could serve as the "catch all" so the chair can be functional as precisely that... a chair
I did just put a chair and behind it a roomdivider with hangers on. But that is more because we dont have any money to spend on new accessories so I do the best out of what we got. Looks cozy and stylish. But my intention though is to start chosing outfits and putting them on that chair every evening, so no last minute -and no pile, will ever exist in the space. And I guess, a more stylish look aswell!
What's the Facebook group? TIA!
Clutter magnet...and I am embarrassed to say I live in a studio, so my 'bedroom' chair is also my living room chair. On the other hand, I had a period of insomnia where my chair became my bed and my bed turned into a storage area. At least the chair holds less clutter and forces me to tidy up more often.
A hoarder is born.
I love the idea of a chair in the bedroom but I could not pull it off, major clutter magnet...just got rid of it.
I have a lovely chaise that almost never has any clothes on it. I would love to recline, relax and read on the chaise, but my dog won't let me (well, she will share a little as long as I don't get too comfortable or take up too much space). So no, it is not a clutter magnet - it is a dog magnet.
Clutter Magnet...absolutely! Actually, I move stuff from the bed to the dresser (top!) and back every night. The pile is 2-1/2 feet high as I type...my bad.
l love, love, LOVE AZkathy's idea of the coat rack! That would help!
mjr's concept of the hook that miraculously empties itself is almost bang-on...except I envision my imaginary housekeeper/personal assistant taking care of it! HAHAHA!
Time to have a look at some of the "organizing" posts on AT!!!
I have a kitchen chair in my bedroom that I use specifically for this purpose! Clothes go on it at the end of the day, draped neatly, and I put them away in the morning when I'm getting dressed. I've tried to train myself to put away as I go but it just never happens.
I like the idea of a coat rack much better, though! Much smaller footprint, much more suitable. Can't put random things like books on top of my clothes.
